I listen to funk and soul but I've never heard of those names, whoa--and I thought that I knew funk/soul music---I am now shamed. I'm gonna have to check them out.

youngsoulrebel 11-16-2005 12:06 PM

Oh, please do. William Bell was an early Stax/Volt artist -- my favorite of his songs (which is his best known) is "You Don't Miss Your Water". Ann Peebles is best known for "I Can't Stand the Rain," but she has many other amazing songs--some of the best stuff to come out of Willie Mitchell's Hi Records (Al Green's label). This is also where O.V. Wright recorded most of his work. There's a lot of amazing soul out there---and i'd say Stax and Hi are the best places to start.

Monkey Dog/You're Gonna Make Me Cry...

...one of!

Check out;

You Got Me - Jaibi
Girl Across The Street - Moses Smith

To name just two.

youngsoulrebel...excellent taste. :thumb:

youngsoulrebel 11-16-2005 05:52 PM

Thanks, right-track. i actually haven't heard Jaibi or Moses Smith. but soon i will.

Along with countless smaller Independent labels such as;

Okeh, featuring artists like Major Lance and Billy Butler.
Los Angeles based label 'Mirwood'. Bob and Earl, The Olympics and Richard Temple.
Ric-Tic.
Thelma.
Cameo Parkway.
Revilot.

The list is endless.

Okay, I remeber those songs -yeah. Have you ever seen the documentary WattsStax--I think it's called...it's a cool documentary--it's commentary from artists, Richard Pryor and random people --and the backdrop is a funk/soul concert--it's pretty cool

youngsoulrebel 11-21-2005 11:02 AM

No, I haven't seen that documentary -- but I think I've heard about it. A concert in the Watts section of Los Angeles? I'll definitely have to watch it soon.

youngsoulrebel/Pilgrim...what other Soul artists are you interested in?

nstarpg 11-29-2005 07:27 PM

I definitely agree with you the music from the mid 50's to the mid 70's is the greatest "Sam Cooke" is my all time favorite vocalist very smooth and mellow. The bands from the 70's can't be beat.

jr. 11-29-2005 08:43 PM

I enjoy a lot of what people have posted, so there's no need to rewrite it.

One person asked where to start with Tower of Power. Get hold of 'What is Hip', and you've got ToP in a nutshell.

One I haven't seen mentioned are the OJays. For the Love of Money is one of the absolutely most bad a## basslines you're ever going to hear.

Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Rose Royce, Billy Preston, Edwin Starr, all have the funk.

Hope the link works for; The Carstairs - It Really Hurts Me Girl.
If you love soul...you'll love this gem. (Turn Up Volume)

The Carstairs also did a superb, pounding version of Edwin Starr's - He Who Picks A Rose.

Jr... much prefer the soul of Edwin Starr over his funk work.
Tracks like '25 miles'.

Big fan of Mayfield too.

I like soul and funk in limited doses, but I just can't listen to them for hours at a time. I like a mix of various genres. Rock, jazz, soul etc.

boris jawaka 12-01-2005 09:41 PM

jimi hendrix was in parliament for a while before he left cos he didnt like the uniforms

jazzfromhell 12-02-2005 06:32 PM

Where'd you hear that? I don't claim to be an expert on Hendrix or any of Clinton's projects, so I can't say for certain it isn't true, but I've read a good deal about all of them and have never heard such. If he ever worked with Clinton, it was before Parliament or Funkadelic were officially formed. Clinton had been in the music since around 1955, though, so it's certainly possible, he had a group called the Parliaments before Funkadelic was formed in '68, which may be what Hendrix was in. Still, I've heard about Hendrix touring with the Isleys and Little Richard, but never Parliament.

i read it in an Uncut special magazine of the great guitarists where there was a small "did you know" box which said that he played in an early line-up of parliament

right-track 12-04-2005 01:45 AM

^True...before he launched his own career he also played with Sam Cooke, the Isley Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner and (I think)... Little Richard.

jazzfromhell 12-05-2005 08:22 AM

He definitely played with Little Richard and the Isley Brothers, I've read that multiple times.

I LOVE FUNK haha

Man, the GodFather of Soul was somethin' else, ya know?James Brown was/is one of the greatest funky legends!!!I'm a musician that loves to incorporate funk with many different styles such as metal, jazz, hard rock, blues, etc...Funk is just something that makes you kinda feel hip, energetic, loose, etc...Combining that with hardrock or metal truly brings a new feel to the style that can take it to so many levels!!!:band: With bands like Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers, you get both funk and metal involved which makes it nearly a whole different style to itself!!!By the way, I love to jam to Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers...
...and I take on both of those bands quite often!!!Funk is what great, energetic music is all about, period!!!:drummer:

TheBig3 11-13-2007 09:32 AM

You know, I just listened to The Big Bang Theory for the first time by Paliment and jesus is that a god damn jam. Its nearly 7 mins of cosmic funkyness.

dnoi 01-19-2008 10:52 AM

i'm really into the Zapp & Roger talkbox/hard kicks & bass kind of funk!

and also 80s funk with synthesizers :afro:

I do!

quagmire740 01-24-2008 12:05 PM

Sly and the Family Stone were the greatest IMO

scorzi 01-25-2008 05:03 PM

according to me curtis represents the slimier range a little bit if I am allowed to draw it up in this manner. If about soul somebody speaks, according to me about James B. it is necessary to speak it.

devilsmaster 01-29-2008 09:09 PM

I love listening soft music.its really nice.

jackhammer 01-31-2008 06:07 PM

This thread has run it's course and consists of a lot of YEAH I DO! posts. Closed. If you know good bands-start a thread!
