Dr. Luncheon Man 03-03-2004 07:51 PM

Who here likes Funk/Soul music?

I'm talking Parliament, Ohio players, Bob James, Joe Tex, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Fatback Band, Earth wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Marvin ***e, Willie Bobo, Betty Davis, The Supremes, Roger Troutman and Zapp, Cymande, the meters etc.......

Anyone?

DJ_Jester 03-03-2004 07:52 PM

I would have to say I love the genre? But I know nothing about it. It's all about the bass. I love funk bass lines.

Dr. Luncheon Man 03-03-2004 08:06 PM

I was like you a couple of years ago. Just buy a couple funk complitations to get you started and your love for the music will blossom from there.

DJ_Jester 03-03-2004 08:14 PM

I gotta say that 70's music really has to be my favorite time period for music. Even though I don't post down here.

Dr. Luncheon Man 03-03-2004 08:25 PM

Yeah i love it too becuase it was the period were musicians started combining traditional instruments with electric instruments and synthersizers and stuff. I also love it how funk bands bak then consisted of like 15 people.

DJ_Jester 03-03-2004 08:29 PM

Dude you're so on with that. I was just thinking today how bands have shrunk down to 3 piece bands now. I was just thinking about posting about where the art of the rhythm guitar has gone. Seems like no one just plays rhythm anymore. Always the vocalist or something. But back then... damn right! It was always about putting out the best music.

Edgil 03-04-2004 04:19 PM

if you people condsider Rage Against The Machine "funk" as some do then...
I LOVE FUNK haha

aight peace ;)

I'm sure they have a lot of funk influences.

DJ_Jester 03-04-2004 06:00 PM

They definitely have that bass sound I was talking about.

2tonelol 03-11-2004 03:20 PM

Would James Brown count in this bit too then? His Bass lines could blow the wrinkles out of your granny's face!!

Edgil 03-13-2004 11:10 AM

Edgil 04-01-2004 04:16 PM

Truly awesome. I am very familiar with each of the above names. With the
exception of The Supremes, I have music by all of the artists mentioned.
"Old school" is my personal choice as far as music goes, regardless of the
genre. However, I do have a particular fondness for old funk and jazz.
Great stuff.

FUNKYWORM 10-24-2004 10:14 AM

What about Quzar, Mutiny, Ohio players, Rick James and the Headhunters.
As far as the Supremes are concerned, and Motown for that matter, it was the beginning of the end for Great music. Motown ushered in the mass produced, generic
pop music era. Stax and later Casablanca Records kept the funk alive while giving the
artist a creative outlet and the listener an alternative to the "assembly line" bland music of Motown.
I am and always will be "devoid of pop"

daria 05-17-2005 11:24 AM

I was just prepearing to post a new theme about soul (funk and disco), but I found it.That's O.K., you are thinking about it! I really love that kind of music, who is telling you 'dance, dance' and who is such naturally produced, with great rhythm sections, but also vocals and other. I'm feeling good with Otis Redding, Aretha, Stevie W., Green, J.B., Wild Cherry, Stretch, Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina, The Supremes, The Commodores...there are more. If someone has some reccomands about soul and funk, please, let me know!

SATCHMO 05-17-2005 02:01 PM

James Brown
Parliament Funkadelic
The Isley Brothers
Average White Band

Sweet Jane 05-18-2005 01:41 PM

I love Otis Redding, Al Green, Smokey Robinson; Hookers got me hooked on Sam Cooke (wow it even rhymes) I didn't realise it was him who sang half those songs, like 'Wonderful World' which is amazing. Sly and the Family Stone is sooooooooo good been listening to that constantly this month.

Tower of Power...? Oh is that who does 'Play that funky music?' **** no that's Wild Cherry I'm sure. I love that song too. Recommendations for Tower of Power?

Ironically, they do a kickass cover of Play That Funky Music. A lot of tower of Power is very "White Funk". Its very good, but sometimes gets a little corny. They're famous for having the tightes funk/soul horn section in the world. Check out the songs What is Hip and So Very Hard to Go.

shandapanda 06-03-2005 02:30 PM

when in New Orleans Jeff Watkins from James Brown's band sits in on alto sax, along with Willie Green whom is currently touring with the Neville Brothers...the 4 piece is smokin, it's got the old school funk sound mix todays jam theories..
and oh my, how can a thread like this exsist without someone mentioning the Dirty Dozen Brass Band somewhere, they've been around for a long time in NOLA...
for more recent new orleans style funky stuff check out galactic, big sam's funky nation, papa grows funk, and P.B.S(porter, baptiste, and stoltz)
and for bass lines, VICTOR WOOTEN...funkiest man alive on the bass today

i love Sly and the Family Stone and the Miles Davis fusion stuff. Zappa did some great fusion on the Waka/Jawaka Grand Wazoo albums too.

also, an organist called Larry Young did some great funk/fusion

my favourite fusion/funk unit though, is a local (Australia) band called "Goose" there albums might be hard to get elsewhere but they are seriously high powered funk

Pilgrim 11-15-2005 10:57 AM

Sam and Dave--those are the guys that sang "Soul Man" right?

youngsoulrebel 11-15-2005 06:13 PM

Anyone heard O.V. Wright before? His song "You're Gonna Make Me Cry" is one of the greatest soul songs you will ever hear. period.
