^ Since the thread is asking "greatest disco/funk" I saw that as disco *or* funk and voted for Parliment/Funkadelic. I agree that they are not disco

Say what you will about Chic but they did write their own songs AND played their instruments, unlike many of their contemporaries and some that followed them as well. However, I do differentiate between disco and funk, simply because the musicianship in funk music displayed a harder edge without question. Disco was definitely more "lighweight", so to speak. However, it was certainly more popular than funk without question. Be that as it may, there's room for both!

And YES...there IS a place for Chic in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, contrary to popular opinion. Hopefully they'll be inducted sometime in the near future.

There is a sub-genre of music called disco-funk, in which bands like Chic, A Taste of Honey, GQ, and a host of unknown bands reside, but this style of music is more disco than funk. Parliament/Funkadelic falls nowhere near this category

EXACTLY THIS!!!!!!!

"FUNK"; birthed between the late '50' & the early 60's, is the "off-spring" - of which it's direct lineage can be traced - to early "BLUES" (also the patriarch of "R&B" & "SOUL").
Though "FUNK" shares the same musical "genes" as "BLUES" , it grew, matured & developed it's own unique persona. "FUNK" took certain elements from "BLUES", such as it's slow-grind, straight tempo & standard, 3-bar chordal structure (w. basic bass/drum backing perfs, etc.) & flipped it. In it's simplest most descriptive form, "FUNK", which focuses mainly on a single chord or key structure, is a musical genre that emphasizes heavily on syncopated upbeat rhythms rather than melodic content; designed to make 1 "get in the groove & move ". It's reinforced by slick/tite drum performances followed by deep bass-lines that flow - in symmetry - with the drummer's play (check "Tower of Power's joint "WHAT IS HIP" for ex.), seasoned with percussive-heavy, rhythm guitar play {with wah-wah} (check Kool & the Gang's classic "Love The Life You Live" for ex.) flavored with "brassy" horn sections & hi-lighted by simple, yet effective lyrical content (check the vocal-work on the "SIDE EFFECTS" hit "Always There" for ex.).
"FUNK" is 1 of the very few musical forms that still today is able to lend it's "pedigree" to successfully "merge/fuse" with different genres such as jazz, rock, hip-hop & even pop-music!

Disco, the "adopted" child of "FUNK" ...............apologies but never been a fan of this type of "moo-zik" (tho' I do realize & acknowledge it's accomplishments & popularity)......

......Disco....much Luv to Chic, Taste of Honey, Cheryl Lynn, Al Hudson, ....ummm....Donna Summer.....ok, I gotta stop here before I huuuurl!:o:
