ALFRED'S MUSIC TASTE: AN OVERVIEW
[Part 1]

Imma go thru my library, and pick out some of my favorite music. Sound good?

1. 16 Horsepower "Fire Spirit"
An upbeat alt. country song by 16 Horsepower. This isn't a good representation of their sound, however, just a note. Whatever, I love it.

2. Alexisonfire "You Burn First"
Yes, another song that badly represents an artists sound, but I don't care. You Burn First is a slow track that features (debateably) no screaming, unlike other songs of theirs. Whatever, it's a gloomy masterpiece.

3. Asian Dub Foundation "Naxalite"
I've seen ADF called a lot of things. Breakbeat, Ragga, Hip Hop, and as the name suggests, dub. You get the basic idea, though. This is my favorite song by them.

4. At The Drive-In "Lopsided"
While I love ATDI's more aggressive songs, I have a soft spot for their lighter, more indie rock-oriented stuff. This one is superb.

5. Bad Brains "F.V.K."
A quick, fast, punk track. Gotta love Bad Brains.

6. Beulah "Silver Lining"
Catchy, fun, indie pop track. Love it.

7. Bob Dylan "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry"
Yes, yes, you've probably all heard this song before, but I can't make a comp without some Dylan on it. This one is great.

8. Cancer Bats "French Immersion"
I don't know why I didn't listen to Cancer Bats before September. Them and Alexisonfire make me proud to be Canadian. Yes, this song is one of their most popular ones, but rightfully so.

9. The Clash "1977"
The Clash are well known on these boards, so I'll throw in a slightly lesser known song by them. 1977 was the b-side for White Riot, and contains my favorite Clash line "No Elvis, Beatles, or The Rolling Stones in 1977".

10. Descendents "Cool To Be You"
I don't like to end a comp with a pop-punk song, but whatever. Descendents rule.

Two Different Nights: Night Two
And as I promised last night, here's part two. Hope you enjoy it...


1. "New East St. Louis Toodle-Oo"—Duke Ellington
In a narrow alley, you huddle under an old brick archway to get out of the rain. After fumbling around in your pocket you eventually retrieve the tiny glowing bottle of quantum distillate and pour the slightly luminous blue liquid down your throat.

2. "Sirocco"—Pram
You wander back out to the street and darting from awning to awning you make your way down the sidewalk. All around you the windows of bars and restaurants display warm scenes of overflowing crowds.

3. "I Dream of Ghosts"—Land of the Loops
As you pass a bus stop bench the first waves of the distillate begin to overtake take you. You feel a little fuzzy, slightly out of phase. Your fingertips feel as if they are coated in candle wax.

4. "Pisces"—Zodiac
You find a hookah bar to pass the time and wind up splitting a pipe with a strange man whose face you can never quite make out.

5. "Noah's Ark"—CocoRosie
Now you're back outside and the rain is still falling but somehow it doesn't seem to hit you. You pass through umbrella carrying crowds on your way down to the riverwalk and not a single person looks up at you.

6. "Senhor Santo Cristo"—Torrez
Slipping into a matchbox-sized bar unnoticed, it takes you several attempts to get the bartender's attention. You order a bourbon to take the edge off. After only a couple sips you find you are no longer able to pick up the glass. Each time you try, your fingers seem to pass right through it.

7. "Bone Bomb"—Brian Eno
You step back out onto the rain soaked riverwalk. A woman covering her hair with a newspaper runs toward you and without hesitation straight through you. You feel your body dissipate as she passes through. It's a strange sensation but not unpleasant, as if you were a dandelion blown apart by a sharp breeze.

8. "X-Playo"—Soda Stereo
Catching the gusts of wind the particles of you float up into the air. Below you crowds scurry along the riverwalk and raindrops splash down into churning waters. You observe the city lights like a vast neural network as you drift up into the clouds.

9. "Beyond the Mountain Qaf"—Secret Chiefs 3
As you rise up into the great black silent sky you find yourself able to follow the movement of atoms all around you. It is both day and night now, laid out before you in an infinite web of past and future all happening at once. And you stare straight into it, into the unblinking hexagonal eye from which all movement unfolds. Everything around you splinters.

10. "7"—Cafe Tacuba
Everywhere at once, you drift.

Good stuff Molecules, although for some reason two of the songs wouldn't extract for me.

Bad Days - Nice soft starter, sweet little melody. I especially like the added punchiness of the fuzzy bass line which kicks in half way through. This is the first I've heard of The Flaming Lips, but I think I might check out more.

Black is Black - One of two tracks that I didn't really like that much. The beat is good, but the other production felt kinda boring. The rapping has a distinct flow, but didn't do much for me.

Burning Issues - Nice interlude.

Crows - Great energy, a fun bouncy rock track.

Down at the Club - The other track that didn't do much for me. Not bad, but it felt very flat and mediocre.

Roses are Free Instantly catchy, perfect slice of pop goodness. Love the carnival esque break at 2:10.

There are like at least 500 releases, and most of it are by bands who have released only one album and disbanded. In the meantime, you can try the one I sent to 4ZZZ sometime back.

Wow I love this song. Of course I'm biased, because Thom Yorke can do no wrong in my eyes. But it's excellent all the same.

Commerce, TX - Ben Kweller
This song inspired my infatuation with BK. As well as hedgehogs.

Pictures of Me - Elliott Smith
I have MB to thank for my obsession with Elliott Smith.

Swing Low - Rocco DeLuca & the Burden
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands.

Farewell Ride - Beck
I rock out to this song in the shower. Rock. Out.

Fool - Cat Power
MB also gets my thanks for my discovery of Cat Power.

Talk Show Host - Radiohead
I found this song on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack and it was really one of the first songs by Radiohead that I knew. I'm still addicted.

Sea Lion - Sage Francis
Again, one of the first tracks I knew by the artist. It's splendid.

Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
Those who know me would know that no mixtape of mine is complete without a Kinks track.

Oh! Sweet Nothin - The Velvet Underground
I first heard this on the High Fidelity soundtrack. It'll make me tear up from time to time.

The descriptions really worked here, without which I wouldn't have got some tracks and enjoyed it.
I wouldn't have really listened to "Indian Love Call" for example, but the description definitely made it somewhat listenable.(yeah, country is still so-so for me I'm afraid )

Kirby's Ten Tracks
Of The Moment

1. My Cool - Adam Tensta
   I've recently begun listening to Adam Tensta. I really dig what I've heard so far. Pretty good.
   
   
2. All Love - Theory Hazit [ft. Elias]
   My girlfriend recently turned me on to Theory Hazit. What I have heard is pretty amazing. Completely original.
   
   
3. OMG! - The Gun Club [Matic Lee and Ivan]
   Gun Club was a guaranteed great group, when I found out Matic Lee was involved in it. His friend, Ivan, is a pretty good rapper, also. Matic Lee produces all of his own music, and is a great rapper.
   
   
4. Bakin' Soda - Hangar 18
   This is the first Hangar 18 track I heard, after listening to them on G4's Freestyle 101. I was instantly hooked.
   
   
5. Mom & Pop Killer - The Grouch
   This track is about all of the franchises that are killing the Mom & Pop stores. Unfortunately, Mom & Pop stores are getting harder and harder to find.
   
   
6. Crunkster Malunkster - Whiskey Blanket
   Another group that I was recently turned on to by my girlfriend. I really liked this track, as well as most of their latest CD. Whiskey Blanket definitely has a unique sound.
   
   
7. Hold On - Lazee [ft. Neverstore]
   Lazee, like Adam Tensta, is from Sweden. Both of them are pretty good rappers. Lazee hooked up with Neverstore, a Punk Rock band from Sweden. (at least, they call themselves Punk Rock). They do the chorus.
   
   
8. Primo's Four Course Meal - Celph Titled
   Celph Titled, from Tampa Bay, does this track over four different DJ Premier beats (hence the title), and does really well. Punchline rapper. Not for everyone, but I dug it.
   
   
9. Breed - Otep
   Terrific cover of the Nirvana song. Otep has a wonderful voice.
   
   
10. Early Mornin' Tony - Felt [Murs + Slug + Ant]
    Basically Murs and Atmosphere. How could this be any bad? Just listen to it.
