Elliott BROOD - Miss You Now

Probably my favourite song off their newest LP "Mountain Meadows", a perfect way to end an album. If you're a fan of their sound or interested in the "gothic americana" genre then this is a great song to start off with.

Buck 65 - Way Back When

I like to refer to Buck 65 as Canada's Aesop Rock, both have very abstract styles of writing as well as similar ways of delivery. This is one of my favourite Buck 65 songs, perfect for driving down a windy road at night.

Luther Wright & the Wrongs - Comfortably Numb

Bluegrass band out of Kingston Ontario, these guys did a ballsy move by releasing their first album as a bluegrass version of Pink Floyds' "The Wall". So many good songs it was hard to choose just one, but I figured everyone who is a fan of Pink Floyd knows the song "Comfortably Numb" and therefor people would get the most enjoyment out of hearing a bluegrass version.

Jon Lajoie - Pop Song

I'm sure at least some of you guys on this forum are familiar with this guy from his Youtube videos "Everyday Normal Guy", "Two Girls One Cup" and "Show Me Your Genitals". This is one of the songs I had not heard before and was quite impressed when I did. Essentially it's a painfully true spoof on Pop music, both the music and the people behind it.

LuciDream - Lady Midnight

Perhaps one of my favourite bands from Canada, this little known group emerged from the ashes of Internal Affairs and become something much more. A combination of acoustic indie and hip hop I have not heard an album or band for that matter quite like LuciDream. Hailing from Calgary of all places, this group is sadly no longer around and only produced one album, but it's one album that you can listen to time and time again.

Devin Townsend - Tiny Tears

Devin Townsend holds a very special place in my heart. His music, like his moods, changes on a dime (the joys of being bi-polar). While Strapping Young Lad was a way for him to vent his more... evil and angry thoughts, his solo stuff was a way for him to vent of more of his less angry and evil stuff. Not that it's particularly happy, the songs tend to deal with failed relationships, suicide, and the other trifles we find in this thing called life.

VoiVod - Rebel Robot

It was hard for me to choose just one song from this group as I have their entire discography. One of the few Canadian thrash metal bands that managed to pierce the International market and become known outside of Canada.

The Smalls - My Saddle Horse Has Died

Corb Lund (singer from the country band "Corb Lund & the Hurtin Albertans) punk/rock/jazz/metal side project. An interesting, provocative, and catchy group, this song in particular was later featured on one of Corb's country albums which gave me hope that a Small's reunion was in the future but so far nothing has come. Regardless this version of the song is absolutely fantastic and hypnotic.

The Tea Party - The Bazaar

Probably the most mainstream song on this playlist, as well as the most mainstream band I have on my computer. I cannot get enough of these guys. The vocalist Jeff Martin has one of the deepest voices that can accurately hit the low notes and make them very melodic. This song is particular has always stood out to me as one of their best.

The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - Operation Get the Hell Outta Here

Local (to Vancouver, not Reno) this band has quickly risen above other ones as probably my favourite Canadian group that is still together. They are a H.P. Lovecraft inspired band, so many of the lyrics contain references to his work, sometimes blatant and sometimes more obscure. This song in particular is pretty easy to get if you're familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's work. See if you can guess what story they're referencing.

I decided to make a 10 track mixtape available for download of the 10 artists I have reviewed so far in my journal… For most of them the songs on the mixtape are not from the album I reviewed itself, but from another album of theirs that I felt deserved highlighting. Sometimes they are very different (Arcana’s Cold Blast) or much of the same (Last Exit’s Discharge). For the songs that I put on that are from the actual album, it’s a case of not having more of that artists work (Unfortunately in many cases). It has a bit of a few different genres, jazz, rock, rap, neoclassical, electronic, ambient, folk...

Perfect picture for a perfect comp

Here is a ten track taster of some hip hop that I like and I have generally tried to not going for the usual suspects. Hopefully for any of those who are not too sure about Hip Hop then you can give this a listen and see that it's not all booty shaking and bling.
