Begginers Guide to Hip Hop

5-Ugly Duckling- Almond Rocha

7- Jurrassic 5 - I Am Somebody
8- Run Dmc- You be Illin
9- NWA- Express yourself

15- Snoop Dogg- G Funk intro
16- 2Pac- Changes

These arent necessiraly my favourite tracks by any of these artists and if I was to make a 16 track best of hip hop comp it wouuld be completely difference comp. This is intended to give a rough idea of what the genre is about and first and foremost most of the tracks were chosen either with the fact that they have good crossover appeal or have nice melody, or just give a picture of what a certain style is about.

This is a mix for people who arent into hip hop, hopefully ill convert some people with this as alot of the tracks on this were some of the songs that first turned me onto this brilliant but often derided style of music.

I Can't Stand The Rezillos. That is one of the greatest Punk albums of all time. That's one of my favorite albums. The greatest bass playing on a album ever IJMO (in J. Mascis opinion.) Amazing, amazing guitar playing and guess who played guitar for them? Jo Callis no less from The Human League.

Does anyone have recommendations for a beginner's guide to UK Pub Rock?
like the Motors, The Smirks, etc etc?

A couple of electronica mixes, as requested...

A Beginner's Guide To Modern(ish) Electronica #1
Party Mix

http://www.fun-center.com/_upload//W...ay%20Party.jpg
1. 808 State - Pacific State
2. Underworld - Holding the Moth
3. Leftfield - Afro Left
4. Transglobal Underground - Drinking In Gomorrah
5. Junkie XL ft Lauren Rocket - Cities In Dust
6. Groove Armada - If Everybody Looked the Same
7. The Prodigy - Thunder
8. The Crystal Method - Busy Child
9. Overseer - Stompbox
10. Manchild ft Andy Cairns - Rehab
11. The Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
12. Fluke - My Spine
13. Propellerheads - Velvet Pants
14. Cold Storage - Body In Motion

Alright, no-one specifically asked for this one, but the above mix (an update of an older one I did) should, with any luck, prove that electronica can make as much sense blaring through your headphones as it can on a dancefloor. The tracks should be in the above order but, in case they aren't, make sure to re-arrange them as above, as the mix'll work so much better that way. Click the picture for the link and enjoy.

A Beginner's Guide To Modern(ish) Electronica #2
Trip-Hop & Ambient & Stuff

http://wiki.blender.org/uploads/thum...s-AO-Radio.jpg
1. Amorphous Androgynous - Tiny Space Birds
2. Goldie - Truth
3. Thievery Corporation - The Outernationalist
4. Kosheen - Hide U
5. Hooverphonic - Vinegar and Salt
6. Everything But the Girl - Low Tide Of the Night
7. Morcheeba - Bullet Proof
8. Think Twice - Halo Halo
9. Nightmares On Wax - What I'm Feeling (Good)
10. Global Communication - 7:39
11. Biosphere - The Fairy Tale
12. Higher Intelligence Agency - Hubble
13. Air - Sexy Boy
14. The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea

And here are some of my favourite ambient and trip-hop numbers, with a total headfuck from Goldie thrown in for good measure. Again, the link's in the picture and, if the tracks don't get to you in the above order, make sure to re-arrange them as above again.

Dr.Seussicide 01-21-2010 10:59 AM

Downloading the Trip Hop and Ambient mix. Looks nice.

lucifer_sam 01-21-2010 12:21 PM

I've got most of both of those but it might be wise to reacquaint myself with them. Thanks a bundle, Bulldog.

4. Transglobal Underground - Drinking In Gomorrah

Kudos for including this. Storming track. I have virtually all the tracks on these comps unfortunately.

Bulldog 01-21-2010 03:44 PM

Yeah, Drinking In Gomorrah's a great track. Take the Tram from the same album very nearly got the nod in its place, which is another absolute favourite of mine.

If there are any tracks on the mixes that look particularly eye-catching, just give me a shout and I won't mind dishing out a link or two.

^ Great comp you made there Mr. Jackhammer sir! Some terrific stuff with a powerful, punky and better yet meaningful edge - I can definitely see the similarities with Midnight Oil. More people need to hear this.

Thanks heaps for the additional links you sent my way too.

The beginner's guide to...

Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band

http://rickgrimesfansite.net/images/beefheart.jpg

1. Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do - Safe as Milk
2. Moonlight on Vermont - Trout Mask Replica
3. Owed T'Alex - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
4. Dirty Blue Gene - Doc at the Radar Station
5. Ah Feel Like Ahcid - Strictly Personal
6. I Love You, You Big Dummy - Lick My Decals Off, Baby
7. The Host, The Ghost, The Most Holy-O - Ice Cream for Crow
8. Electricity - Safe as Milk
9. Gimme Dat Harp Boy - The Mirror Man Sessions
10. The Floppy Boot Stomp - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
11. One Red Rose That I Mean - Lick My Decals Off, Baby
12. Veteran's Day Poppy - Trout Mask Replica

I omitted most everything from the middle of his career, while it's not completely awful it certainly doesn't encapsulate the man's true essence. Had I the opportunity I would have included the entirety of his first four albums, they're all really spectacular.

Click pic.

Farfisa 01-23-2010 01:34 PM

Alright now, this might turn into a beginner's guide trilogy, sheesh. I've put together a comp of my favorite Sun City Girls tunes and I'm pretty sure there is enough schtuff for the unkowning "normal" people to enjoy. Well, I threw in a few "joke" tracks because to be fairly honest, it wouldn't be SCG without the weird humor.

Eye Mohini
Horse cock Phepner
X+Y= Fuck You
Ghost Ghat Trespass/Sussmeier
The Shining Path
The Geography of the Swastika
Kickin' The Dragon
The Vinegar Stroke
My Painted Tomb
Eyeball In a Quart Jar of Snot
Helwa Shak

ps.If you want to be a pussy skip through the "joke" tracks...
pss. approach with an open mind...
piss. If this isn't "Beginner's" enough then I'll up another version of the comp...

Link, link, linky, link

jackhammer 01-23-2010 01:41 PM

Wow that was quick Sam! I have Beefhearts first 3 but still a couple of tunes I don't know. Solid stuff.

LLSS- I had a Sun City Girls album a couple of years back and couldn't get into it but it's time for a fresh evaluation. Both on the D/L.

The comp also flows very well backwards in the 'recently played' playlist, just so you know

Memories In Future Tense
A Beginner's Guide To Australian Punk

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumb_2...1919UmNZgA.jpg
1. The Birthday Party - Sonny's Burning
2. The Celibate Rifles - Spirits
3. The Sunnyboys - My Only Friend
4. The New Christs - Circus Of Sour
5. Eastern Dark - No Pictures
6. Midnight Oil - Don't Wanna Be the One
7. Lime Spiders - Action Woman
8. The Johnnys - Injun Joe
9. The Triffids - Old Ghostrider
10. The Screaming Tribesmen - Igloo
11. The Church - Memories In Future Tense
12. Laughing Clowns - New Bully In the Town
13. Died Pretty - Satisfied
14. Hoodoo Gurus - Tojo

Yes, they had the stuff in Australia too, and a lot of it was actually quite good! Following the emergence of punk in Australia in the late 70s (thanks to the Saints and Radio Birdman, who I haven't included here because you should already have some songs of theirs:p:), a host of great bands boasting a garage rock sound and ties to the punk rock of the aforementioned Saints and Radio Birdman emerged. In some cases with this tracklisting, these ties are more and less obvious than others. As I say though, this is a compilation of my favourite songs that emerged following the demise of of those two bands.

I won't claim to be an expert or anything though - this is just a bunch of songs I like from the era. Again, the pic's the link. This is another update of an older mix I've done as well, so whoever downloaded that one will already have quite a few of these songs.

Another one no-one asked for, but I was bored, so...

A Beginner's Guide To David Bowie

As a few us may know, this guy's been responsible for a lot of great music down the years, and has quite a large and mind-bogglingly stylistically-varied discography as well. It goes without saying that a fella like Bowie requires quite a large compilation when it comes to something good enough for this thread then. So, three of the mixes compile two songs from each of his albums, while the fourth one's made from a bunch of my favourite rarities, and may or may not be interesting to any of us who already have plenty of his official albums. Best to re-arrange the first three mixes in chronological order as they have been below should you wanna download any of them. Anyway, without further ado...

The National

All The Wine-The National Primer
http://omgplz.files.wordpress.com/20...henational.jpg
One of my favourites,The National proved themselves to be one of the best groups of the 00's by virtue of superb songwriting and performances, and constant development from album to album. This compilation covers their development from American Music Club and Wilco-beholden indie types to a smart, confident band on a par with any other as the decade drew to a close, making records on a par with those of prime Tindersticks and Afghan Whigs in which the songwriting and vocal performances of Matt Beringer were second to none.
Tracklisting
1.Fake Empire
2.Patterns Of Fairytales
3.All The Wine
4.American Mary
5.Murder Me Rachel
6.Slow Show
7.Secret Meeting
8.Theory Of The Crows
9.Ada
10.Lucky You
11.City Middle
12.Mr November
13.About Today
Tracks numbers 1,6,9 from Boxer, 2,5,10 from Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, 3,7,11,12 from Alligator, 4 and 8 from The National and 13 from Cherry Tree EP
