Anyways I really enjoyed it. I can hear the Shins resemblance, but they definitely have their own twist on things as well. After listening I discovered we already owned Picaresque but I'd somehow missed out on uploading it and listening to it. So I did, and it was good. Thanks for showing me a great band.

Oh, good, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This is a great thread!

Would anybody be interested in a beginner's guide to Firewater? I'm having a go at making a "best of" for myself, and I could share if anybody is interested?

Yeah, i had to include that. it was a hard comp to make, trying to pick a song or two from every release. On Platts Eyott Island was a hard one to pick for as all the best songs were already included, so there had to be a doubler.

a beginner's guide to modest mouse
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j3...tmousebw-1.jpg

my prior comp isn't online now and I decided to expand it to include something from all of their albums. all of the files are perfectly tagged and in mp3 V0 format(re-encoded from flacs that were ripped via EAC from my personal cd collection). if you haven't given them a chance yet I highly recommend this as the time to do so! I spent weeks listening and re-listening to tracks weeding out inferior songs from their entire discography. here is the end result:

Breakthrough
Novocain Stain
Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine
Doin’ the Cockroach
Trailer Trash
Polar Opposites
Interstate 8
Broke
Grey Ice Water
Other People's Lives
3rd Planet
Gravity Rides Everything
Tiny Cities Made of Ashes
A Different City
Float On
Bury Me With It
The View
The Good Times Are Killing Me
Florida
Missed the Boat

I'm pretty sure someone already did Modest Mouse, and I think someone may have even done a second one w/o knowing before you :P

The Fall of Troy

The Fall of Troy were a progressive hardcore band from Mukilteo, Washington. They are one of my favorite bands, so I thought I'd make a beginner's comp for them. I started out making it all even-handed, including songs from their last album, but since almost all TFOT fans hated that album I'm just gonna pick highlights from the first 4 releases: S/t, Ghostship demos, Doppelganger, and Manipulator. I've changed the track numbers of the songs so that they will go in the right order in a playlist. Enjoy!

1. Ghostship Part I
2. Laces Out, Dan!
3. The Circus That Has Brought Us Back to These Nights (Yo Chocola)
4. Sledgehammer
5. Macaulay McCulkin
6. Semi-Fiction
7. Whacko Jacko Steals the Elephant Man's Bones
8. "You Got a Death Wish, Johnny Truant?"
9. The Dark Trail
10. A Man. A Plan. A Canal. Panama.
11. Ghostship Part V
12. What Sound Does a Mastodon Make?

It is terrible. I don't even care that it's popular or overplayed, it's just terrible.

Everytime I post a compilation people say "No *song-title*?" If you had done it first you could have put it in, but you didn't, so SUCK ON IT :bonkhead:

Violent & Funky 01-23-2011 04:54 PM

'Float On' is a great song. What is there to dislike? It's catchy as hell...

debaserr 01-23-2011 05:04 PM

I am among the most hardcore of their fans. it's not my absolute fave, but calling the song terrible is an overstatement.

posts like these bother me. you are shitting on someone's effort with a dismissive one-liner.

@khfreek: yes, I had made one previously, I addressed that in the post.

khfreek 01-23-2011 05:50 PM

my bad bro. You lose points for not having Dramamine and Tundra/Desert :P

Oh, I wasn't trying to criticize your effort, I was just stating my opinion of that particular song.

In other news, I'm glad you included Missed the Boat as that's my favorite MM song

Stupid lyrics, worse-than-usual singing... it would be better as an instrumental lol

The vocals are catchy and that is all that matters to me about them...

ThePhanastasio 01-24-2011 02:51 AM

I don't think "Float On" is MM's best song by any means, but it's really not *terrible*.

I mean seriously - I know so many people who are really into MM now who would never have even heard of them were it not for "Float On".

It's not their best song, but it was actually pretty important for them as a band in that it helped get their name out there a little more.

James 01-24-2011 10:03 AM

I wasn't criticising your effort, just saying I didn't like the song. I only like their first three albums really.

An Introduction to The Divine Comedy, Vol 1.
http://iheartau.com/wordpress/wp-con...NeilHannon.jpg

If a hybrid of Scott Walker, Elvis Costello and Prefab Sprout sounds like your thing, then search no longer. Londonderry's finest Neil Hannon has been putting out quality pop music for nearly 20 years, and this compilation should give you an idea of their 90's period, with a second covering the 2000's to follow.

1.Becoming More Like Alfie
2.Bernice Bobs Her Hair
3.Commuter Love
4.If.....
5.Timewatching
6.A Woman Of The World
7.The Certainty Of Chance
8.Through A Long And Sleepless Night
9.Lucy

Let's Go To Hell!!!
The Music Of God Bullies

http://media.mlive.com/kzgazette/ent...18e6_large.jpg
Welcome Aboard Interworld Airlines Flight F.I.N.A.L. With Supersonic Non-Stop Service To The New Jerusalem

Hailing from the beautiful city of Kalamazoo, Michigan with a rather triumphant reign over noise rock that lasted from 1986-1995....God Bullies never shied away from the absolute beauty in our decaying society and loved to exploit the exploiters in a cynical, sarcastic, and very disturbed way.....with lyrics about drug addiction, religious hypocrisy, serial killing, sexual debauchery, corporate conspiracy, and the flaws in political systems

although they were on a few labels the bulk of their albums were all released on the immortal Amphetamine Reptile records...and in my opinion out of all the great bands on that label this is exactly what i would consider the pinnacle "AmRep sound"....

somehow this band seemed to miss out on any mainstream success and were often banned from venues due to their blasphemous on stage antics....what really sticks out is the surf rock fun which is somehow blended in with their dark and disturbing view towards the world...this is especially apparent in Cemetery where Mike Hard begs for you to "Rock n Roll and Worship Satan" and their quite good and fun cover of Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing'

so my introduction for your undeserving ears and souls...is in chronological order...starting with tracks from the 1989 debut lp "Mamma Womb Womb' and ending with their final outing...'Kill The King' released in 1994 on Alternative Tentacles......enjoy

Act Of Desire
Creepy People
Fear And Pain
O Shit
Red Blood
What Reason
Join Satan's Army
You Sexy Thing
Live Sex (mamma)
You Cry Now
Let's Go To Hell
Cemetery
Do It Again
I Am Invisible
I Like It Like That
Monster Jesus
I Want To Kill You
Ordinary Man
Pet Monkey
Saw You Dead
Ruby
How Low Can You Go
Detain My Brain
Hate
She's Wild
Artificially Inseminated By Aliens

Jesus Is In All Of Us.

dankrsta 02-08-2011 05:44 PM

^I'm gonna have to check that out, never listened to God Bullies.

bob. 02-08-2011 05:50 PM

i think you'll enjoy them....if somebody put a gun to my head and forced me to name my tope five bands of all time....they would be in there without hesitation.....and Mike Hard (pictured above) is up there for coolest guy in rock history :)

dankrsta 02-08-2011 06:01 PM

Did you once post one of their songs in 'Mini-review a song above you'? It was a great 'song' with a guy and a girl talking throughout and some intense music underneath that progressively got wilder, if I remember. And someone gave it 0 :( Can't remember if that was God Bullies.

Top 5 eh? It's so hard for me to pick 5, I can always pick 3, but there's a big competition for last 2 spots.

bob. 02-08-2011 06:08 PM

hahaha....yes it was "Pretty On The Inside'...a conversation between a prostitute and her "john"...where she tries to get his to shoot heroin with her "you like sticking your thing in people and i like sticking my thing in people...whats the difference."....yeah they would fall within my top three pretty easily

+81 02-09-2011 11:29 PM

Always meant to check out God Bullies so I guess it's time to finally do so. You type a very persuasive bio, bob.
