Um...good luck with that.
Albums by King Crimson - Rate Your Music
's quite the task.

sidewinder 06-04-2009 10:52 PM

If you strip out the hundred live albums it's quite attainable. ;)

Bands like KC are the reason I wish RYM would create a separate section for live albums.

jacklovezhimself 06-08-2009 08:20 PM

I didn't realize they had so many acclaimed live albums.

Son of JayJamJah 06-08-2009 09:00 PM

I was having a discussion with some friends this weekend and we came to a pretty obvious but previously overlooked conclusion.

King Crimson is probably, objectively the most under rated band of all-time.

Comus 06-08-2009 09:09 PM

No one at my University knew who they were :(

I've always been around people who have known about King Crimson, so it came as a massive shock when I found out they're pretty obscure.

Mirrorball95 06-09-2009 06:07 AM

I have two albums, 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' and 'Thrak' -which really is a kick ass album.

I actually didn't like Thrak at all.

I love Thrak. I think their later albums are rather underappreciated, especially that one.

Thrak is a really good album. The intro track is so good. I love that first riff.

The concept of a "double band" produced lame results when Yes did it, but King Crimson managed to work wonders with it.

And lets not forget the godly bass/chapman stick duo of Tony Levin and Trey Gunn.

That bassline on Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream is fantasticly funky. I love the bass work on this album.

p.s. I threw it on earlier when I saw it was mentioned. I haven't heard it in a while.

Mirrorball95 06-09-2009 05:26 PM

Yeah I also love the riff on 'Vroom'. I usually do this when Im getting into a new band. I bought their most acclaimed album and then went out and bought a more obscure album from much later in their career. What I was surprised at was how heavy Thrak was compared to 'In The Court..'.

Also this part makes me happy. I know what its like when you listen to a really great album you havent heard in ages.

This is more of an introduction to a genre and hopefully some of the younger members might like it and see where the multitudes of metal sub genres came from initially. Thrash was a massive shot in the arm for metal as the NWOBHM was burning out along came Thrash with it's Metal roots influenced by Punk and Hardcore. All the tracks on here are pre 1990 and I have purposely excluded the big 4 here ( Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer,Anthrax). I have also seen 7 of the bands live although that is just me showing off! enjoy please!

1. Death Angel-Evil Priest
Recorded in '86 and released in '87 this bay area band are one of the most influential bands in the Thrash scene and not bad for a drummer who was only 14 at the time! lyrically this is bloody awful cliched crap but that bass line in the middle and the subsequent accelerating guitar riff is nothing short of stellar.
2. Vio-lence-Phobophobia
If you are wondering it's fear of fear! Vio-lence never really got the attention that they deserved probably due to Sean Killians vocal style which many found ill fitting amidst their razor sharp riffs. This track has plenty of riffs jostling for attention yet it is still streamlined and tight as! Guitarist robb flynn went on to front a little band called Machine Head!
3. Testament-Burnt Offereings
Outside of the big 4, Testament were always the fans favourite and it could be argued that theirs is the quintessential Thrash sound. Again lyrically terrible, it makes up for that in the twin guitar muscular riffs and it remains a Thrash classic.
4. Sepultura-To The Wall
For many the band never recaptured the raw power of their second album Schizophrenia from which this track is taken and this awesome track backs that up. Brilliant raw production and the stupendous drum work of Igor Cavalera make this another absolute classic and not nearly heralded enough amidst the bands later success's.
5.Kreator-Stream Of Consciousness
Always one of the rawer bands in the Thrash fraternity and a band that's live power has never been captured well on vinyl at all which was a shame as the efficient riffing and vocal power of Mille Petrozza has always given Kreator a unique sound. Love the openeing riff that bounces off the bass drum pattern.
6.Sabbat-The Best Of Enemies
How I love that intro with the bass guitar and double bass drum punctuated with that guitar riff. Sabbat where always a band not quite of their time and if they were around in the 70's i swear that they would have been a Prog band! Musically they were very different from the usual sound and employed lots of time changes and unusual vocal techniques. Dreamweaver is another album that needs reappraising.
7.Mortal Sin-Mayhemic Destruction
Mortal Sin were unusual due to the fact that they were from Australia (hardly a mecca for Thrash) and the fact that they were unashamedly old school thrash. The same titled debut album suffered from bad production and the band fell into many cliches on the album. However this track showed their potential and really cements it's place here with it's change of pace and awesome riff that kicks in at 2:50. It remains one of my favourite Thrash riffs ever.
8.Dark Angel-No One Answers
The main stop start riff on this track is still absolutely fucking mental and still sounds heavy as hell even today. Dark Angel began life as a cliched speed/Thrash band dabbling in the usual Satanic/morbid lyrics but they changed tack with this album. Lyrically very powerful. It dealt with child abuse and it's devastaing effects on the young. It's a shame about the faster parts as the production cannot quite keep up with the band and it sounds a little murky. That riff is still worth it. Amazing.
9.Meliah Rage-Impending Doom
A bit of a cheat here as Meliah Rage were essentially a power metal band that jumped on the Thrash bandwagon and occasionally on their debut (from which this is taken) reached some great heights. The track is built around a number of excellent riffs and changes in pace that warrant it's inclusion.
10.Nuclear Assault-Brain Death
Epic.Epic.Epic. Although Nuclear Assault took their influences from Punk and Hardcore, the first 3 albums are beloved in Thrash scene and the bands ability to keep that raw edge coupled with Dan Lilkers ridiculously fast bass work made them a live favourite ( I managed to catch the band twice in 4 days in different cities and I managed to hang with them on the later date). This track is worth it for the brilliant middle section that begins at the 3:40 mark and is a perfect send off for my intro to ya all!

NSW 06-13-2009 10:31 AM

I love me some Sepultura...yay! I'm checkin' this out now.

Expect a Pixies comp up tomorrow because I almost cried when I found this thread and discovered there isn't one :(. Other than that, would anyone be interested in any of these:

Bad Religion
Pink Floyd stuff not found on Wish You Were Here, Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall, or Animals
Aesop Rock
Immortal Technique
Animal Collective
Boo Radleys
The Decemberists
Dinosaur Jr.
Sonic Youth
Eels
Fugazi
Grateful Dead
Husker Du
Jimi Hendrix Experience
MF Doom
Mice Parade
The Misfits
Nirvana
Of Montreal
Led Zeppelin
The Shins
Shpongle

These are all bands whose discographies I have that I feel I am knowledgeable enough about and would actually care to do one of these comps, and feel that there could be some interest on here. But I dunno. Just say something if you want one of these to appear, and it will!

boo boo 06-15-2009 01:37 AM

The Decemberists are pretty good from what I've heard. They have been described as an indie prog band.

I'm somewhat conflicted over that.

I am interested in a comp, I'd download it.

zeppy111 06-15-2009 03:50 AM

^^^ A great discography, definately worth checking out. I would do it but I haven't advanced onto the uploading of music yet.

Wouldn't mind seeing checking out a Grateful Dead comp.

music_phantom13 06-15-2009 09:01 AM

Whew... Looks like I've got my work cut out for me tonight. I'll sort out as much of this as I can; I already have to up a few albums for people and I'd like to do another 4 for my top 100 tonight. I'll do the Pixies and the Grateful Dead tonight for sure, then see what I else I can manage.

Hmm I don't know about that. I'm honestly not too clear on what exactly defines prog; I was reading through an argument you and Comus were having somewhere on here and it confused the hell out of me even more. If the definition of prog is a band that uses albums to tell stories, then I suppose they could be considered one. This is particularly true with the album The Hazards of Love, which tells a story about a woman, her lover (who is a shapeshifter), his mother (a forest queen) and an immoral man. The Crane Wife also tells two separate stories throughout the album, one about the crane wife (surprise), an old Japanese folk tale I believe, and a story that I think is based off of the Tempest.

As far as musical sound, they have a soft, baroque pop type sound throughout most of their albums. You'll have to check it out and find out. The comp will be a bit hard to do, as some of their best songs are very long, but I'll do my best to cover their career. It'll be up in the next couple of days for sure.

EDIT: Sorry guys, work is kicking my ass now (cuz I'm too busy working on my top 100 while I'm there :/) and I'm really busy what with sister's graduation and so on, but I will get these up by Friday. Doesn't seem like anyone's too concerned anyway... Sorry though, I'll do my best to get this up as soon as I can.

A Beginner's Guide to R.E.M.

http://www.independent.co.uk/multime...REM_46154s.jpg
Left to right: Mike Mills, Michael Stipe, Bill Berry, Peter Buck

The massively successful, critically acclaimed four piece known as R.E.M. was formed in 1980 in the alternative music breeding ground of Athens, Georgia. They are currently comprised of lead vocalist Michael Stipe, lead guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Mills. Drummer Bill Berry retired in 1997, but has played with the rest of the band on one occasion during the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. They have released fourteen critically acclaimed studio albums, and have won several Grammy awards for their work.

They established their classic jangly guitar sound with their 1982 debut EP "Chronic Town. This sound would be utilized until 1988's "Green", when, with a major label deal, R.E.M. could afford to experiment with different instruments; cellos, violins, synthesizers, and most importantly mandolins, one of which would be used for what would become R.E.M.'s biggest hit, 1991's "Losing My Religion" from the album "Out of Time".

With 1992's "Automatic for the People", R.E.M. established a new trademark sound; best shown by the hit singles "Everybody Hurts" and "Nightswimming". R.E.M. changed their sound yet again in 1995 with "Monster", arguably their first real rock record since 1986's upbeat "Lifes Rich Pageant" [sic] and further developed it for 1996's "New Adventures in Hi-Fi". And yet, they returned to their melancholic ballad style for Up, Reveal, and Around the Sun after their drummer Bill Berry had an aneurysm onstage and retired from the band amicably.

Their most recent record, entitled "Accelerate" is actually a return to their guitar oriented sound of the 1980s.

The Anticon label has some pretty decent acts signed to it. Yoni Wolf was a great find a few months ago, as was Restiform Bodies. I'm going to download this and see what else he's done.

music_phantom13 07-06-2009 09:17 AM

I know I'm a failure and I sorta disappeared for a few weeks... but I've got the Pixies one and the Grateful Dead comps done on my home pc and they will be up tonight. I promise. And they will be worth checking out if you have any interest in the bands.

siamesedream 07-09-2009 12:39 AM

I'm thinking of doing a few that i haven't seen done yet, but alot of them are bands that I'm assuming people are familiar enough with...if anyone wants any of these in particular first let me know - I'll probably end up doing most of them anyway just for fun though.

Beginner guide to:

Smashing Pumpkins (my favorite band, so this would span all albums and b-sides and be a large, maybe 2 disc definitive compilation)
Catherine Wheel
Guided By Voices (I saw one done from just the early days, but this would be a career spanning mix for those interested)
Bad Religion
Hum
The Smiths
Morrissey
Radiohead
Oasis
Thursday
Weezer
Thrice (most people write them off as a simple "scene" band, but their music in recent years actually ranges from electronic masterpieces and piano ballads to folky acoustic tracks and Deftones-esque heavy rockers. This would be a great introduction to a criminally overlooked band)

Essential Genre mixes:

Shoegaze (for those interested in seeing what it's all about, this would be a "best-of" of the genre, old bands to current bands)
Emo (no not the slit your wrists Hawthorne Heights ****, but the REAL deal - the 1980s/1990s stuff that began in DC with Rites of Spring and had a 2nd wave in the 90s with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate)

So you wanna hear the REAL stuff?
Ever wonder why people are so into a band, but you've only heard their radio hits? These would be mixes of deep cuts to show you why.

Nirvana
Aerosmith
Green Day

Go for it, i've always neglected emo which is bizarre considering the rest of my taste.

Yes, someone please do a Radiohead comp. I came to this thread today specifically looking for one and was shocked no one had made a comp already. I've only heard The Bends (great album BTW) but want to know what all the fuss is about...

If you've heard (and enjoy) The Bends, it should give you a good idea of what the fuss is about. Great album indeed. It's OK Computer that's the real kicker though in my view. Kid A is also fantastic and another popular favorite. I'll work on making a good mix of stuff from all albums, but Radiohead's definitely a band where people tend to have all sorts of varying opinions on what's "essential"

Either a Thrice or a Morrissey comp would earn a stupendious amount of cool points.
