Is this still going? Nobody has posted for a while, but it's quite a cool project. I have a couple suggestions.

Gypsy jazz: Minor Swing - Django Reinhardt

I think this is definitely the quintessential gypsy jazz song.

Jazz-funk: Chameleon - Herbie Hanc0ck

I might be able to come up with a couple others later.

All added except for the first song you suggested SB. Don't know what to classify it as. I'm sure the Alternative Rock tag will be snatched up quite quick (and as cliche a choice it might be, I'd personally like to see Smells Like Teen Spirit occupy that spot, but I won't claim it).

I'll be taking the Grunge category, however, with this timeless classic.

Afrobeat: Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit

This is really wonderful stuff. Just discovered this guy today during my research of Afrobeat music. Seems to combine a lot of my favorite elements of Ghana Highlife, jazz, and funk together.

Great choice!

edit: and cool thread idea, Conan. We appreciate all the work this is gonna require!

So um... what happens when folks have disagreements about whether a song should represent a sub-genre?
Doesn't seem like this should be strictly a first-come-first-serve thing, considering what it is.
