How about Impending Doom?

Could go under Christian Metal or Deathcore.

Just get someone to second that replacement and they're in (I won't because I know absolutely nothing about those bands).

kraut-rock
avant-prog and ethereal

Yeah, that's the process. But it's all good, I changed it to his new suggestion.

Sorry about that. When somebody suggests a song for a genre that isn't on the list I'm supposed to research it and I just forgot to get back to you.

I added the Avant-Prog Suggestion. However, I know nothing about Dark Wave or Ethereal Wave. Can you tell me what main category they'd fall under?

That's the plan. As soon as all the songs are chosen and assembled it'll be available for download.

It would be weird if they weren't, I agree. Also, I added the song. I was however imagining something more along the lines of Miley Cyrus for that one

They fall under Rock section definitely. The reason I asked for the second opinion on whether should Dead Can Dance be tagged as dark wave or ethereal is this: I consider Dark Wave to be a broad term that encompasses several genres like death-punk, gothic-rock, ethereal, cold wave etc., basically it was originally a term describing a darker side of new wave and post-punk. In this regard, Joy Division, for example would be one of the first dark wave bands. But I've seen that some people look at dark wave as a later development and more synth oriented, melancholic music, very floating etc, basically the same as Ethereal. Here's the wiki page and it actually agrees with my view: Dark Wave

But, to get to the point, Dead Can Dance were an Ethereal band, but also Dark Wave. It's not a mistake to call them with both names. We already have a Goth-Rock genre on the list and if we include Ethereal, should we also include Dark Wave as a separate genre, or should Dead Can Dance define both? That's my question and I'd like to hear opinions from other people here.

someonecompletelyrandom 11-22-2010 02:19 PM

Perhaps we could combine them?

Dark Wave/Ethereal Wave (?)

dankrsta 11-22-2010 02:47 PM

^^I thought about that, yeah, we could combine them. Good idea. And if someone comes along and really wants to define Dark Wave, you can then separate them.

someonecompletelyrandom 11-22-2010 02:54 PM

Categories and noms added. :)

morgos 02-10-2011 07:31 PM

Is this still going? Nobody has posted for a while, but it's quite a cool project. I have a couple suggestions.

Gypsy jazz: Minor Swing - Django Reinhardt

I think this is definitely the quintessential gypsy jazz song.

Jazz-funk: Chameleon - Herbie Hanc0ck

I might be able to come up with a couple others later.

Insane Guest 02-10-2011 08:04 PM

I was wondering what happened to this project. You planning on finishing what you started Conan?

captaincaptain 02-13-2011 09:42 PM

Northern Soul

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

Mrd00d 02-14-2011 07:05 AM

Ok, hadn't seen this project before...

Spoiler for A note about goa/psytrance:
As for goa trance, psychedelic trance:

Quote:

However, the police clamped down hard on these psychedelic gatherings and with such a likely possibility of police intervention it seemed that a new formula was needed, one that would allow trancers to get maximum enjoyment from the party before it was shut down. This formula was basic, fast, and cheesy, with short intense sets; this allowed party goers to have a consistently intense experience from the beginning of the party until it was stopped.
In ’96 the music had changed so much from its Goa beginnings that the term Goa trance no longer seemed suitable and the new term of psychedelic trance, or psytrance for short, was coined to refer to this new style of music. The multi-layered melodies of Goa trance were stripped away and a darker and more repetitive form of music concentrated on rhythm and groove appeared...Currently, there are many sub-genres within the psytrance scene, including minimal/progressive psy, morning psy, full-on psy, and dark psy.
as well as psy-ambient

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic_trance

I learned a good bit about one of my newer favorite genres, but wikipedia and the like make it really confusing to get a firm grasp on how they came to be.

Goa Trance - Hallucinogen's "Demention"

Psychedelic Trance - Shpongle's "Divine Moments of Truth"

Psybient/Psychill - Celtic Cross' Jade Garden

-------------------

G-Funk - Warren G's "Regulate" (f. Nate Dogg)

Hyphy - DJ Shadow's "3 Freaks" (f. Turf Talk, Keak da Sneak)

Midwest Hip-Hop - Tech N9ne's "Slacker"

Nerdcore Hip-Hop - MC Frontalot's "Nerdcore Rising" (f. Jesse Dangerously and MC Hawking)

This explains nerdcore a little as well, along with being another song.

Turntablism - DJ Shadow's "Walkie Talkie"

captaincaptain 02-14-2011 10:02 AM

I thought I would add a few more

Post Disco David Bowie - Let's Dance

Louisiana Swamp Pop

Clarence "Frogman" Henry - (I Don't Know Why) But I Do

Adult Contemporary Music

Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time

Neo Soul

Musiq Soulchild - Just Friends (Sunny)

Hair Metal

Whitesnake - Here I Go Again

Turntablism - Beautiful Ugly Sound by D-Styles

From his album 'Phantazmagorea', which was for all purposes, the first major all-scratched full length album release. This is the opening track on the album, and although there are plenty of tracks to pick from, I figured this was as good as any.

langvudai 02-20-2011 08:12 AM

I was going to suggest Get Hurt by No Age but I'll have to upload it to youtube. Not that I strongly disagree with Japanther but I feel there could be a better fit since I feel the tracks more on the garage rock side.

Howard the Duck 02-20-2011 11:42 PM

Hong Kong/Cantonese Rock

Beyond (group) - Amani (song)

Hong Kong/Cantonese Pop

Grasshopper (group) - Lonely (song)

I had already suggested this dj shadow track but the list hasn't been updated yet. Your track was cool, too, but I admittedly never heard it before. Maybe we could vote or some such? My biased vote goes to walkie talkie, for bein' badass. :D

klacc 11-15-2011 02:56 PM

I agree. Does anyone have an account on playlist? I am tired of hearing my own play-lists, curious if anyone else has a good one they would want to share.

Conan, I beg of you. Please find some time to update this. I thought it was really cool. I know you don't have a lot of time or what not, but it couldn't hurt for me to beg. Please!

I second this.

cledussnow 05-10-2012 01:01 PM

Pete Fountain - When the Saints Go Marching In - Dixieland Jazz

Flatt & Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown - Traditional Bluegrass

Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys - Sugar Moon - Western Swing

Herbie Hancock - Spank-A-Lee - Jazz Funk

Art Blakey - Moanin' - Hard Bop

Dj Magic Mike - Drop That Bass - Miami Bass

Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up Look Sharp - Grime

Bobby Charles - Later Alligator - Louisiana Swamp Pop

cledussnow 05-15-2012 12:43 PM

Happened to scroll through and notice some of the recs I posted for certain genres already had recs.

Herbie Hancock - Chameleon for Jazz Funk - can't argue with that selection.

and

Clarence Henry - (I Don't Know Why) But I Do - Louisiana Swamp Pop - another solid suggestion.

Yahrr har Cone Zone, thar be some support for finishing this yet.

I have a good bunch of ideas a page or two back.

innerspaceboy 03-30-2015 05:14 PM

Ambient music

I'll jump in. I saw The Orb mentioned but no dedicated exploration of the subgenres of ambient music. There's a bit of a challenge here, however - as most ambient albums operate as a whole piece and not as individual songs.

I skimmed the RYM charts and checked them against the subgenre wiki articles and thankfully most of the top results matched my own suggestions for key recordings.

DARK AMBIENT
Bohren & der Club of Gore - Black Earth
Deathprod - Morals and Dogma

DRONE
Fripp & Eno's (No Pussyfooting) - Side A - "The Heavenly Music Corporation"
Stars of the Lid, either The Tired Sounds of... or And the Refinement of the Decline
Robert Rich's 7-hour Somnium sleep concert DVD-audio album

AMBIENT HOUSE
Biosphere's Substrata and Microgravity LPs
The KLF's Chill Out
The Orb's 40:00 "Blue Room" single

AMBIENT DUB
The Orb's aforementioned "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain..."

AMBIENT TECHNO
Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Boards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children
Wolfgang Vogit (as Gas) - the Nah Und Fern box set
Global Communication's 76:14

TRIBAL AMBIENT
Steve Roach - Dreamtime Return
John Hassell & Brian Eno - Fourth World Vol 1: Possible Musics

AMBIENT POP
Air - Moon Safari

BERLIN SCHOOL
Klaus Schulze - X or Timewind
Tangerine Dream's Phaedra
Edgar Froese - Epsilon in Malaysian Pale

AMBIENT CLASSICAL
Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra

Can we do anything with the above list? Suggestions?

Frownland 03-30-2015 08:34 PM

Hmm, with drone I think that we can add La Monte Young or Theatre of Eternal Music (more likely the latter). I think that Keiji Haino's "21st Century Hard-y Guide-y Man" deserves a place on it as well since that's one of the most unique drone pieces out there.

Are we just doing the more ambient side of drone or are you thinking of including the more abrasive side as well such as drone metal?

I absolutely rank Theatre of Eternal Music as the epitome of drone. But under the specific ambient umbrella I think the examples I cited are more applicable.

Curious, where does Noir Jazz / Doom Jazz fit into all this?

Any glaring omissions in my ambient-family of subgenre?

I don't really listen to much ambient, honestly. I offered my opinion on drone because that's one of the genres I'm most familiar with. Everything I know off of your list definitely fits. For ambient classical I could see John Cage's "A String Quartet in Four Parts" or Basinski's "The Disintegration Loops". Basinski might not directly fall under the classical portion, but with that piece I feel like it's the most appropriate place for him since that really is a landmark drone piece.

I also think that Aka / Darbari / Java: Magic Realism is the superior Jon Hassell album.

Ninetales 03-30-2015 10:54 PM

could add Space Ambient (John Serrie, Seirom, Michael Stearns, Alrakis, etc being some big names there) and Black Ambient (Gnaw Their Tongues, Trist, Abruptum, Moevot, etc). Also Ritual Ambient as well - Mondo Bungle would be the dude to give recs for that for sure, but Sigillum S probably fits.

Basinski for certain. RYM files it under Ambient, Tape Music, Minimalism and Drone. I'd definitely vote to fit it on the list!

Thanks Ninetales! Definitely add that to the list. That also reminded me that I'd omitted the psybient subgenre.

Carbon Based Lifeforms - World of Sleepers is the stand-out album though Cell's "Audio Deepest Night" and Shpongle's Are You Shpongled? are up there as well.

innerspaceboy 03-31-2015 05:52 AM

Just edited my original submission to add the essential Wolfgang Voigt Nah Und Fern Gas box set. Starting to wonder if perhaps I should build a separate guide to ambient music as this is quickly growing too large for the original thread's project.

Decided to put together an essential guide to Modern Ambient music. My latest member journal entry covers the last 40 years of ambient essentials, encapsulated into two short video features and a handy reference list of albums discussed. Crushed into little nut Clusters and mixed with crispy flakes.
