Flashback Sunday.
Still brings tears to my eyes.

So last Friday the Portland Winterhawks (winningest American team in the history of the CHL) was in Portland to play my Everett Silvertips. I decide to investigate if I can afford to bring my broke ass to the game and root for my Tips. My dad would've been spinning in his grave if I wasn't such a dyed-in-the-woll atheist, in addition to the fact that I personally poured the ashes of his remains in the Deschutes River in New Years of 2001, but I hella digress...
So I go to the box office (I happened to be decked out in my Silvertips regalia, but I hadn't planned on going), I wanna go to the game but I need to see if I can afford to on the pittance I have left after my medical expenses. Then something amazing happened. One of the Winterhawks dancers (whom I never even saw, she was on my right which is my blind side) comped my ticket! Not in the nosebleed seats I was asking for but the best seat in the house! I never saw her but whoever did that, it was one of the nicest, sweetest things anyone has ever done for me. It was one of these lovely young ladies: They're called "The Rose Buds" So I get to the game at Memorial Coliseum (I've been there hundreds of times, esp when I was young going to concerts), the place is PACKED considering it's a Dub game. But even though I was decked out in all my Tips gear and even though we lost the game 3-2 on an uncharacteristic giveaway goal by Carter Hart, I had a great time. The Winterhawks fans were very knowledgeable and totally cool to me, the exact opposite of the OBNOXIOUS Seattle Thunderbirds derelicts that call themselves "fans" (I call them "the Funderbirds", as in "Thuck the Funderbirds", it's a spoonerism). And again, whoever comped me that ticket, thank you from the bottom of my Silvertips-lovin' heart. |

36 years ago today
I wish I could say I was cheering wildly "USA! USA! USA!" but the sad truth is I was convinced, having seen the NHL All Stars unmercifully dismantled by the Russians in '79, that this rag-tag collection of American college kids had absolutely NO CHANCE against the mighty Soviets. So, instead of watching maybe the greatest upset in sports history, I went out drinking (again), made an IDIOT of myself (again), didn't even come close to getting laid (again), went home alone (again, although TBH I don't remember that part), then woke up brutally hung (again), which is when I found out. |

"Do you believe in miracles?" may still be the best spontaneous sports quote of all time.
