3 Step Guide To Remembering Dreams

1: Get a pen/pencil + notebook and put it right next to your bed, or wherever you may sleep.

2: Start Going to bed earlier. (Only because more sleep = more REM sleep = more dreams.)

3: When you wake up each morning or during night wright down anything that you remember from dream. (Even if its only a word, or perhaps a picture. Thats still a start)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now i will tell you a few more of the methods and tricks I have read about, tried, or discovered in doing this three step method. The most important one bing do not get discouraged. It took me about one week of not remembering a single dream to get the hang of it. Also another important part is if you drink and smoke you WILL NOT remember your dreams that night mainly because dreaming is dependent of REM, which is cut off because of the substances.

Another tip (not as important as the first few, but still worthwhile) is to set your alarm six hours after lying down in bed. This should only be done if you can not remember any dreams at all when you wake up. You may wonder ??? hmm what is this doing other than waking me up? Well, it is giving you a chance to wright down any dreams you may have forgotten by morning. They will be fresher and more detailed at this hour.

Keep your sleep schedule approximately the same. Weird hours and crazy times will surely cause you not to dream as much, and certainly not remember most of it. Also for those of you who say "Well this is stupid, I do not dream!" ...That is wrong, you do. You just do not remember it like most others. Eventually you will get better and better over time, remembering small little details and actually feeling more refreshed like you just went on an adventure.

Feedback would be great. Even jsut what you thought of the advice and guide and perhaps if it worked out for you. I will also begin posting some of my favorite dreams down here.

Piss Me Off 06-25-2008 07:21 AM

I think i'll start to do this, a lot of my dreams fascinate me.
Then again, a load of them terrify me as they involve my death, so... y'know.
Reading that though if i have drank that night (but not to excess) i often have the most vivid dreams...

Seltzer 06-25-2008 05:16 PM

I think I'll start this too because I've been interested in remembering my dreams lately... I can only remember one dream in the past month but my sleeping pattern has been very erratic lately.

Dr_Rez 06-25-2008 06:13 PM

@Piss Me Off: Well its not Aways the case. When you drink its disturbs sleep, which causes you to have less REM and not go through the four stages of sleep properly. That is why you would typically have less dreams.

@Seltzer: If you have any problems or questions just ask. And theres other ways to do it with an erratic sleep pattern. If you want me to send you a link to it tell me.

Hey RezZ, do you know anything about lucid dreaming? Now that's something I'd be interested in attempting.

Yea it is a very fun idea. I have tried many times but only rarely have them, the few i have had though were extremely fun.

I probably don't know enough about it to make a guide, thats for another time.

If you want I will give you a link to a really good guide made by someone else.

Nosmada 06-26-2008 12:22 AM

i personally love nightmares, i love being scared shi tless in bed, do you know of anyway to stimulate certain parts of your mind to provoke a certain type of dream, or is that even possible??

Piss Me Off 06-26-2008 02:53 AM

I didn't need to write last night's dream down because it was pretty vivid. I think it's because i randomly woke up at 5 and fell asleep again and then had it.
Wasn't enormously interesting though, i was returning some books to school (like i'll be today) and for some reason this was at night-time and resulted in large amounts of dudes in tracksuits chasing me on bikes.

Oh man, I can't count the number of times I was dying in my dreams, suicide, cancer, AIDS etc. Mind you, I never actually managed to die, even when I slashed my wrists somehow and was bleeding out...gotta love the subconscious.

Two days ago I dreamt I could fly...it was the most fun I'd had in a while...I'm not sure if it was lucid dreaming but I was aware that I could do anything I wanted.

Oh and that bit about not drinking or smoking isn't really true, I was a heavy smoker for 12 years and I've had many vivid dreams...

As i said before it does not always prohibit you from dreaming, just cuts down on amount f dreams had, therefore making it harder to remember.

jackhammer 06-26-2008 11:32 AM

I don't think I ever dreamt of my death. My most common dream is me looking through bookshops, cd/dvd shops and never finding what I am looking for. I guess that is self explanatory really. Most of my dreams I seem to be in control of and I make decisions in them.

Thrice 08-29-2008 05:32 AM

I did this when I was younger. I have always been fascinated by dreaming. I have some pretty far out dreams that make no sense to anyone, except hippies.

Folkie 08-31-2008 05:58 PM

wow i want to try this i always have this one dream where im chased by rotweilers and i think dreams are the weirdest things ever

Mr. Bojangles 08-31-2008 06:49 PM

this seems sweet i remember my dreams for a while but as i get into the day and start doing more things then i start to forget them do you know of any dream interpretation websites?

Dr_Rez 09-07-2008 08:17 PM

*Bump*

Anyone have any good dreams lately?

I know i have. I will be putting a few in my journal tonight, i forgot all about it :(

@Mr. B: Dont listen the those site, they usually are very general and do not help. I would suggest buying a book or as i have an encyclopedia. That still will not tell you what everything means, but steer you in the correct direction.

RyanOwns 09-07-2008 08:27 PM

Why am i having so many dream lately? I use to never have dreams before.

Anyway my dreams are awesome, there usually always about my friends.

Have you been getting more sleep, happier, or having a better sleeping schedule lately?

I dream that God is really a computer made in the future controlling everyone online and I am the only one who knows.

WWWP 09-09-2008 02:54 AM

Last night I dreamt that I saw this huge branch break, and it was a really big deal. I woke up feeling devestated. I'll have to look it up and see what it means.

WWWP 09-10-2008 03:31 AM

I have a dream book.

Yes I do.

WWWP 09-10-2008 10:42 PM

Interpreting Dreams for Beginners. You can find them in most bookstores.

Brad Stengel 09-17-2008 11:58 AM

Smoking salvia gives you crazy dreams.

And a good trick for lucid dreaming is to wear a watch, and check the time twice when you do. In a dream when you check the time, the clock ALWAYS reads a different number each time you look at it. The habit of checking twice will leak into your dreams, and BAM! You're lucid from realizing the time is different.

Not a garuntee though, I tried for like a month and got 1 lucid dream. Still worth it however.

WWWP 09-17-2008 11:48 PM

I had a dream where Musicbanter was an underwater kingdom. Elliott Smith was our God, and no one wore clothes.

I need a life.

Tanglewood 09-27-2008 11:08 AM

The Wierd thing with me is after a night out, i dream of going out again:yikes: So the next morning, if i'm really bad the night before, i cant remember which was the actual night out or which was the dream, Scary stuff

Alfred 09-27-2008 07:56 PM

I've had one or two lucid dreams, but I didn't think to control anything, and instead woke up within a few minutes.

Also, does anyone here sleeptalk or know anyone who does? My younger brother does, and it's hilarious. Most of his dreams are about internet gaming though, freakin' nerd.

WWWP 09-27-2008 08:17 PM

I talk in my sleep a lot. And sleepwalk. One time I woke up at a motel walking towards the pool. Yikes.

Yes I do.

lol. +1
I've heard the thing to do is set your alarm clock 10 minutes or so earlier - this way you wake up in the middle of REM (which is apparently the final stage of your nightly kip) and it's all fresh in your memory. Every time i've woken up from a deep, deep sleep everything seems ultra-surreal for the next half hour.
My dreams are hardly ever the crazy narratives that most people seem to get, they're just full of Freudian imagery that reinforces my sub-****ty self-esteem (every time i try to run/walk somewhere it's like being on a treadmill, etc)

simplephysics 09-28-2008 12:06 AM

I rarely remember my dreams, nor do I remember to write down whatever is lingering in my head when I wake up. I like it better this way.

Flower Child 04-23-2009 12:25 PM

I had a dream one night that I walked into my kitchen and noticed a secret door i had never noticed before and so i opened it

i then ventured into this great stone dungeon and then I noticed a floating mannequin (the ones that are in science rooms with all the guts and organs showing) coming out of the corner of the dungeon and it was trying to attack me with a pipe.

i ran away and it lost track of where i was (it was pretty dark in there and I dont think mannequins can see very good) so i picked up my own pipe (these pipes were everywhere) and snuck up behind him and busted him over the head with it

then i woke up :)

and then i checked to see if there really was a secret door in my kitchen. (there wasnt)

Kamikazi Kat 04-23-2009 08:44 PM

I'm interested in doing this as well. Some of the dreams I do remember are just plain awesome. I think the hardest part is getting more sleep, going to bed at earlier times. I tend to stay up alot.

I remember when I was kid I used to remember my dreams much more.

That made me laugh. Maybe it has something to do with fear of taking a biology test or something lol.

The most recent dream I had that I can remember is that I was sitting on a stone stairwell that was part of a giant stone castle or something. I was cutting my toenails, they were really long and were made out of stained glass colored in colors that reminded me of stained glass on the windows of a church. I usually focused on cutting the big toes. I was sitting next to one of my friends, who was watching me. Some of the nails I cut were growing back faster then I could cut them, each time in different colored glass. Some had layers of glass on top of each other, which I could peel off individually (don't ask how I can peel glass, its a dream people) as well as a tough, dirty plastic. I tried to cut one of the nails on my big toe, but for some reason failed, then lifted it up with my finger and instead of seeing my toe under the nail, I saw a plastic fishing bait container filled with dirt and worms. It was positioned in a way where it looked like it was a part of my foot, but it wasn't, I actually didn't have a big toe on that foot. Then I woke up.

I've had alot of stuff like what Molecules explained as well. It happens with a ton of things, like when trying to put on a coat, one of my arms keeps missing the sleeve-hole. When I'm putting on my shoes, my foot keeps going on top of the tounge of the shoe, ect.

Thats sucks the door was not there. I have dreams like that often but they never seem to be somewhere I am familiar with.

I thought that dream was awesome just because of how strange it was, I love that kind of stuff. I think the dream may have come from me needing to cut my toenails. Perhaps It was a sign that if I didn't cut my toenails they would turn into glass and one of my toes would fall off and be replaced with a cleverly placed fishing bait container with a toenail on top of it. :thumb:

I dont know its possible that the dream had something to do with a test.

hahaha i laughed so hard reading this. i was in trig class and everyone was looking at me because i randomly burst out laughing.

Does anybody else have dreams that seem extremely scary while you are in them and then when you wake up you can't believe you thought that was scary? Thats kind of how it was with my mannequin dream.

I also randomly wake up thinking there is a snake in my bed and then I jump out of bed yelling SNAKE!!!! and wake my family up. And sometimes I think my hair will fall across my face but Im half asleep and i think its a spider and i'll do the same thing. haha. I did this just last night. It's weird.

Hmm... According to your avatar, you must love zombies. So,

You love zombies.
You also love your husband.
If you love your husband, the reason you must love him is because he is a zombie, because you love zombies.
So therefore, your husband is a zombie.
