Runners thread

Any runners on here? I had stopped running for a few months due to bad knees, but I've been gong to physiotherapy, and i am now starting walking to build up to running.
I bought some cool new runners today so I'm feeling pumped and motivated to get some muscles back in my legs! Anyone wanna talk running?

Astronomer 08-15-2009 04:02 AM

I used to go for a small 6km run every morning but I started getting knee problems so my physio told me to swim instead! Running is pretty bad for your joints so... no more running for me.

djchameleon 08-15-2009 05:10 AM

I need to get some new runners myself. I don't technically run though more like endurance jogging. I go jogging every other day and when i'm feeling ambitious I will take the time out to jog across a bridge near by. The whole run is a total of 5 miles.

FaSho 08-15-2009 08:46 AM

I'm on my highschool's cross country team :o:
I can run a 400 in 82 seconds, and a 3000 in 12 minutes. Not spectacular, but good enough considering i've only been running a lot for two weeks.

simplephysics 08-15-2009 09:10 AM

Only from the 5-0.

Damn you! I came in her just to post that

Alfred 08-15-2009 09:56 AM

I only run when it comes to school events. I don't recall a lot of my times, but I know I can run a 14 second 100 meter and a 29 second 200 meter. Not that great, but only a couple of my friends can match/exceed it.

I do cross country too, but I have no idea how fast/well I do with that.

I ran 400 in HS, personal best was :57.3 but that was along time ago, and I was 170 compared to my 235 now. Stick with track and cc though, they are the best sports in High School.

dollarsandcents 08-15-2009 12:56 PM

I run pretty regularly, usually variations of the same route. Need to plot some more! Usually range from 5-10km which is a nice distance for the evening. I find it a good way of winding down, escapism and a good excuse for a playlist! I love it when you find a song that perfectly matches your pace and you can stride to the beat.

As track running goes I used to do 100m in 12-13 seconds but that was a good 5 years ago now. I now play less and less sport so use jogging/running as a way to keep fit and at least curb the weight gain which is inevitably going to happen. Not stop, maybe alter the gain from exponential to arithmetic. Here's hoping.

Yes well, hopefully I can strengthen up the muscles to protect my knees so I can run. I am an inefficient swimmer so I find I get really tired swimming laps. Running suits me, so hopefully I can get back into it.

pourmeanother 08-15-2009 07:14 PM

I ran the San Francisco (Half) Marathon a few weeks ago. Finished in 02:02'50". Kind of a slow pace, but I only trained for 4 weeks so I was amazed that I could even finish- plus kick 6000 people's asses who I finished ahead of...

Freebase Dali 08-15-2009 08:56 PM

I got stress fractures in both legs due to running retarded distances against my will for 6 years straight.

No thanks.

Why against your will?

pourmeanother 08-16-2009 02:39 AM

Sounds like the military.

tassels 08-16-2009 03:42 AM

Yes, it does.

If I wouldn't pass out after the second lap at that pace. I'm a one and done kind of guy. 6:05 was my fastest mile.

ProggyMan 08-16-2009 04:04 PM

My best mile is 6:31, it's too bad my legs are so short. I'm thinking about doing track in HS but idk, it's a lot of work. In other news Usain Bolts breaks his own record for the 100 meter.

Don't you live in Canada? Try having to play sports against black people...

Sad, but true. It does raise the bar a bit.

FaSho 08-16-2009 05:12 PM

Yep. There's one black person on my XC team, he's only a freshman and is definatley one of the 5 fastest on the team, including juniors and seniors.

Schredds 08-16-2009 05:57 PM

Cool thread, I actually just got back from the track down the road, I did six laps, and six sets of stairs, its been a while and I seen this thread so I went for a run. I used to do alot of running in middle and high school, track and field as well as cross country, I think our cross country course was around 2 kilometers that we HAD to do once a year competeing against other schools, I enjoyed it though. There was about 250 people in each grade category my best place was 12th. In track and field my main events were the 100m dash and 100 meter relay. Years after that I got into boxing and we would run 10k three times per week, I wish I could remember my best time but I cant, it was good though, I remember the first time I ran it I puked right after, haha, but after a little practice it became no big deal.

I agree, scenic country roads beat a track or treadmill any day. Running in the sand on the beach is highly overrated, although its probably better than ankle weights. Half the time I run with an Ipod, I end up ditching it just so I can hear the sounds that surround me. But that's just how I run... I try to make it serene.

midnight rain 08-24-2009 09:51 PM

I run purely to stay in shape. Other than that I find it boring unless I have music to give me some adrenaline. That, and I haven't had the best experience with running in the past.

i do my best thinkin when i'm runnin,....i make all my plans, have conversations with people in my head,.....and if i run with an ipod, all i end up doin is dancein anyway

Me too! I solve problems and come up with great ideas and designs when I'm running. Unfortunately, my physio took a backwards step last week, so I'm still walkin.

FETCHER. 08-25-2009 04:53 PM

i try to run around this huge park where i stay at least once a week, & i jog round all the farm roads every other day, i think its best without my ipod sometimes, am scared incase i cant hear cars etc! but if im jogging round the village i tend to use my ipod :D
i find swimming better though, as its much easier on my joints :D

pourmeanother 08-25-2009 05:27 PM

I can't think while I run, and never understood what people think about. Sports in general clear my head, but don't give me time to contemplate things.

Most of the time while running I'm either... watching girls run, doing obsessive-compulsive counting of things/math, or singing a song in my head.

I run with one earphone in, so I can still hear cars.

Really? I am a great problem solver when I run. And I have brainwave ideas.

Yes. The endurance sports are the only real challenge out there.

Speaking of your bad knees, theres been quite a bit of talk around the subject of running barefoot after the press the Tarahumara have been getting the last 5 years or so. If running barefoot made me as immortal as those folks, I'd give it a shot.

The furthest I've run is a half marathon back in '01 in one of the crazier courses in the NorthEast (New Bedford Half) and while I spent the few days after rotting away in bed, I loved every minute of that race.

I moved pretty hard into triathlons after that (nothing big, sprit-distance) but running is the anchor discipline and you can't really get away from that. Whats the farthest race you've done? Got a favorite?

It means there isn't a challenge in athletics quite like the endurance sports. What races have you run, anticipation?

anticipation 08-26-2009 02:41 PM

I spent 6 years doing track and cross country, competed in sectionals and regionals in high school. Saying that there's no equivlent challenge to running in athletics is idiotic and incredibly ignorant. Running is something everyone is born knowing how to do and the only thing that separates most professionals from amatuers is experience and level of conditioning. To my knowledge no one is born knowing how to play hockey, be a quarterback, play tennis, etc etc. What sports have you ever played a high level? I'm guessing none or you wouldn't have said such a stupid thing.

Wow, those people must be tough!

I actually have run a race in years, TheBig3KilledMyRainDog. I just started up running again a couple of years ago to lose some weight from my. I would have liked to do the City to Surf this year, which is a 14km run in Sydney, but my knees couldn't have handled it.
My goal is to get myself better and start running again and hopefully do some fun runs next year.

FaSho 08-26-2009 07:16 PM

Running my first 5K ever on Saturday. Yay.

You'll note I never said that. Just the same, being born knowing how to do something, and that thing being a challenge are not related. Most people I know can move chess pieces correctly, few know how to play chess.

Endurance sports are the only real challenge because its not about who caught lucky breaks, or who's team showed up in force that day. Its a challenge because no ones there to carry you, you can't sit the bench and let your team take the heat when you can't. You're left out there, for long periods of time, on your own. Theres no one to confer with, or to give you support. Its a challenge because, as your body breaks down, and your muscles and nervous system tell you to do anything but keep going, you do.

Endurance sports are not just a test of a mans body, but his mind and spirit as well. And as I write that line, I suppose I have to agree with you, Anti. Some folks are born with that temperament, they know how to keep going. Some just never will have it, no matter how much they want it. I guess maybe that's why there are team sports.

Sweet. Is it for an event?

FaSho 08-27-2009 05:26 PM

I'm pretty pumped, but I'm not sure if 'Ready' is the right word. Recently I've been running a lot of strides, to work up some speed, and some pretty long distance runs (well long for me at least; 4-8 mi), just to see how long I can go at a steady pace. I'm sure I'll do fine, but i just recovered from 'enflamed lower tendons', so hoping that won't flare up again.

Just curious, have you ever played ultimate frisbee? Football? Basketball? I mean at a serious, competitive level.

Team sports are a different kind of challenge, but a challenge none the less. Have you every played on a serious, competitive basketball, ultimate frisbee, football etc. team?

When was the last time you played a team sport competitively?
