The Knitting Thread
 

Okay, I know I've been out for a while but life has been crazy, with billions of electronics labs piling up and a frantic job search. During my absence, I picked up my sixth grade knitting bag again and went knit-crazy. I have like a billion hats and scarves and mittens now, and my yarn collection is becoming alarmingly vast.

So, MB, can any of you knit or are planning on learning how? Feel free to show off any projects. And don't forget, men can knit too :D
Also, I teach people how to knit at a knitting store in my town so I can help people who don't know how to get started.

I was just skimming MusicBanter to see what's new, when I realized, "Hey! There's a knitting thread!! Isn't this the coolest place?!?"

What you say about men knitting is so true! One of my family friends was a professional bricklayer who did some brickwork in the city where I live. He was also a knitter. He knit my mom a really lovely, multicolored hat. I was impressed and amused, because I didn't expect a bricklayer to be such a good knitter. He was a very good knitter.

As for me, around seven years ago I purchased knitting needles to try my hand at knitting, but I never got good enough to actually *make* anything. I'm impressed by all that counting of stitches that knitters do, but I think that counting also scares me off from the activity. It starts to sound like work, and I'm afraid I'll lose track of my stitches!

If I *do* eventually knit, I think I will concentrate on circular scarves, like this one:

^ Circular scarves are very practical, because they never fall off and you can use part of the scarf as a hat. :)

My mum has been teaching me to knit, I can do it now but I'm too slow so I never want to do it. I've been knitting a hat when I feel like it since summer, I'm excited to finish it but I don't want to put the effort in haha.

hah, for me I've been using knitting to use up time, it's a good zen time water so it doesn't feel like effort to me.

Also, vegangelica: circular scarves are the greatest thing since sliced bread. if you get certain kinds of synthetic yarns, when used as a hood they make sure no moisture touches your hair. it's wonderful.

for me, the christmas knitting rush has begun, and it's scary! I've recently learned to knit with my left hand to purl faster. i am working on a drop-column lace hat for my mom. drop columns are my favourite because they're stupidly easy. you just drop a stitch and you get insta-lace after you remove the stitches with a crochet hook to get little ladder rungs.

I know super manly sailors used to knit. And I knew someone when I was in college who create three dimensional household objects out of knitting. That's really the only contribution I have to the thread unfortunately.

Nevertheless I do think it's cool even if, as chronically hot person, it's very rare for me to wear anything that's knitted. :)

Meh, I'm working on a scarf made from random bits of my girlfriends stash. I like knit wear a lot but I refuse to pay $400, even for those super sweaters & cardigans from Gudrun & Gudrun. On a side note, knit wear looks superior to every sort of coat & it doesn't make that annoying swish-swish-swish noise.

^^^ the above sweater is one of the coolest I've ever seen.

My friend is in the process of knitting a piano scarf. It's a long process because she has to knit the black and white parts separately and so that they will fit together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle.

Damn I want one. That sounds ridiculously cool. Esp if you played piano. I would jam in random places off my scarf haha.

I want to learn how to knit just so I can make the piano scarf for my boyfriend. I think it would take a lot of practice though.
