52 league titles in what is possibly the most predictable club league in the world.
Hardly a worthy achievement.
How many times have the Gers won the European Cup? :)

goodfoot 10-06-2009 01:22 PM

the english league is the same really...

Mojo 10-06-2009 02:34 PM

I understand what you mean by that but...well...not really!

When was the last time anyone other than Rangers or Celtic won the league? Mid 80's?

EDIT: Wiki to the rescue. Aberdeen in '85. If we just look at the last 20 years Rangers won it in '89 and 2009. Celtic have won 7 league titles in that time, the rest are all Rangers.

The English league hasnt quite reached that level just yet.

all comes down to cash/money, the rich get richer and so on, good for the fans of these teams but as a sporting spectacle so predictable, i'm not sure are the same four teams assuming their usual positions, being a rangers fan i've wallowed in the glory, to me the true fans are the east fifes, partick thistle, port vale, & hartlepools of this world, anybody can be a glory hunter.

The English league is a lot less predictable than a lot of other leagues.

And the English league has had 7 different winners since 1985.

Everton
Liverpool
Arsenal
Leeds
Man Utd
Blackburn
Chelsea

It is getting a little tedious if you arent a fan of one of the top four i guess but there has been such a huge gulf in quality and riches between the top four and everyone else that its unavoidable. I wouldn't be surprised to see that change over the next few years with more foreign take overs and ridiculous amounts of money thrown into the game for some other clubs to be able to compete. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate i guess.

It all depends on what their expectations are. If the expectations are too high and they throw good money after bad...see Leeds United, Newcastle etc...it'll just end in tears.
With a good manager and a patient boardroom with a good set up, where the expectations aren't unrealistic, then you're in with a shout...see Spurs, Everton, Villa etc.
With a good manager and a brand of football that's unattractive, but effective...see Wimbledon, Swansea (in the past) and more recently Portsmouth (although that might begin to change now) and the like.

As for a top four being tedious. Well, we're lucky we have a top four and not a top two (if you listen to City fans recently we now have a top 5, apparently), or even a top one...see just about every other league in Europe.

At goodfoot about glory hunters. I agree, but there's nothing wrong with being a fan of a successful football team providing you always have been by birth right and not some band wagon jumping nob end...see the bitter Bertie's at the other Manchester's 'council house'.
