Treble, bass, and mid set to about 7. Gain straight up or about 6 (when playing low, I have it set about the same as the volume - never use TOO much gain). Reverb to 4 or straight up.

I make my tone by ear though...That's just the estimated settings.

My imac G4 (the one that looked like a lamp) had a built in mic on the screen... this was awesome for the purpose you mentioned. I would just hit record, play some chords and then solo over it... no set up involved, sadly my mac pro doesn't provide the mic

I mentioned some of the following in the distortion pedal thread so excuse me for repeating myself. These days I am using a Vox AC-15 amp on clean w/very little reverb (love the bright sound), I rotate between the burns Brian May model guitar and a SX (Strat knock off) guitar. For basic distortion I use the Ibanez Tube Screamer, if I want to liven it up I will combine it with the Boss Metal Zone (EQ set similar to the "heavy metal" setting) which gives it a dirtier sound. I pretty much use my Wah-Wah pedal as a treble booster when I need that extra edge. For atmosphere I go with the Boss (PS3) Phase Shifter & Flanger (rarely use the flanger). For chorus I have a Boss Super Chorus... does the job, nothing special.
