Best sub $100 headphones?

i am looking for the best that i can buy for under $100. they need to be sound tight(not every1 around me can hear what im listening to). they also need to be over ear(no earbuds). obviously, i want the best sound quality possible. this is my main source for listening to music.

i had sennheiser HD280's(roughly $80) and I may buy them again but the ones i got had to be sent back.

any help is much appreciated.

jackhammer 09-19-2008 02:25 AM

Stick with Sennheisers, although some people dislike the warm bass that most of their models have. I <3 their sound and build and I have been using them for years.

Peerbreed 09-19-2008 07:36 AM

I agree stick with Sennheisers if you want closed headphones. They have great SQ and build. I haven't heard any closed headphone that beats Sennheisers at any price range.

debaserr 09-19-2008 02:03 PM

yea i did a lot of research before i got them and i was happy with them. just wondering if i didnt catch something.

I have a pair of wireless Yamaha headphones. They sound pretty good and can go about 250 feet away from a stereo, computer, tv, amp, or anything else you can manage to squeeze sound out of.

JamesCahall 11-02-2008 12:48 PM

I'm pretty happy with my Sennheiser HD 212Pro... although sometimes they crack at high volume...

Headphones - Audiophile's Imput

For a long time i've been using a cheap pair of headphones (Sony MDR V150) and after using my friend's pair of bose I want to upgrade to a better pair. The bose are extremely cheaply made and for the most part werent comfortable. So looking elsewhere to find a better pair

Not sure the money amount, upwards of maybe $200 if the headphones are exactly what I want. I mostly listen to dubstep, hardstyle and trance.

Below is what I'm trying to find:
- Non-coil cord
- 10-15 foot cord
- 3.5mm stock plug in, Do NOT want 6.3
- Durable ( Seen alot of reviews of cheaply made heapdhones )
- Do not really care for noise cancelling headphones

The part I'm not sure about is what the actural specs mean. That is where I'm looking for an audiophile to help me out. I've been told sennheiser makes some of the best equipment but I have yet to try out any of it.

jackhammer 11-25-2008 03:42 PM

Not the best thread but the merge will yield better replys.

dac 11-25-2008 05:08 PM

I have the $80 pair of the senheisers and the uber pro bose ones (both in-ear style) and the senheisers are infinitely better.

thegoldlaw 11-25-2008 06:38 PM

Sennheiser HD280?

debaserr 11-25-2008 06:40 PM

probably. thats what i have. they are great. the cord isnt very long though.

dac 11-25-2008 07:27 PM

Looks like they don't make mine anymore... they look kind of like the CX300s but different. Still great though, I've had them for a year and a half with no problems. Sennheiser gained a customer for life out of me.

thegoldlaw 11-25-2008 10:10 PM

Trace is their any flaws to the hd280's ? Or is there any better that you've experienced ?

debaserr 11-25-2008 11:30 PM

well i havent bought anything other than sennheiser hd280's($80) and pc151s($50). but i have listened to my friends bose and they kick their ass. great great value at $80. go for it. also, they are closed(and pretty much sound tight, I usually dont notice people talking to me.

thegoldlaw 11-26-2008 08:52 AM

I dunno I listened to my friend's bose and honestly I didn't think they were much better then what I had. Also durability was a huge flaw. He had the bose for a year and a half and had 3 seperate breaks on the arch and had both ear pieces glued on. For $150 I honestly would have expected better.

lvsimo77 11-28-2008 12:45 PM

I've got Sennheiser as well, I love 'em.

thegoldlaw 11-28-2008 04:22 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Talk about an upgrade... I didn't realize 280's were so much bigger. I'm loving them

what he said lol

thegoldlaw 11-29-2008 08:26 PM

I wondered why the bass sounded soo flat.. I went into my HD audio manager and put headphones and output both to bass.. sounds sooo clean and powerful.

Sennheiser PXC-150 Portable Noiseguard Headphones - in stock at Sound and Vision

What do you think about these for some portable ones? That's about as far as my budget will go i'm guessing, as gorgeous as the PXC-250 look.

jackhammer 12-02-2008 08:06 AM

I have a friend who has them and she says they are awesome. Noise cancelling is superb. Have you tried here:

Richer Sounds Headphones/Microphones Products

The PX200 are as good and half the price.

Piss Me Off 12-02-2008 08:08 AM

If thats more bassy then i may give them a go, though i found the others for £45 on ebay, tempting...

jackhammer 12-02-2008 08:19 AM

For the extra fiver go ebay as long as you can get a return if need be.

Piss Me Off 12-02-2008 08:22 AM

2 year warranty and the money goes to a children's cancer charity, seems too good to be true!

jackhammer 12-02-2008 08:26 AM

Go for it Luke. Everyone's a winner.

Just curious is 80 pounds alot in UK. Looking @ those headphones for 80 pounds it doesnt look like you're getting alot.

Yeah you guys might be better off ordering from america with the exchange rate. I look @ sennheiser 280's on that site and it says 99 pounds, in america they are 99 dollars. The exchange rate right now is 1 - .6 so the 99 dollar headphones in america only cost 66 pounds if you use the exchange rate. Not sure how much shipping and/or export taxes cost. It would def be something i'd consider

Anything over $18 is subject to import tax. Just another excuse for our government to screw us over.

thegoldlaw 12-02-2008 02:13 PM

How much though? If under 30% I'd consider buying stuff from america. For a while America did this with canada because stuff in canada was always 30-40% cheaper. But with recent events they are about equal.

Also if you order from a company in america do you have to pay the import tax ?

thegoldlaw 12-03-2008 03:40 PM

After a week of using the sennheiser 280 it blows my mind how anyone can use them. I just put on my sony v150's and It feels like night and day. The 280's are 1lbs which I didn't realize but after 4-5 hours of listening/creating music really wears you down. I love the sennheiser sound and their quality but was unaware how much the weight of the headphone effects you. Does anyone have any other sennheisers that arent as heavy ? Someone mentioned the 212's

debaserr 12-04-2008 02:34 PM

damn
wimp

thegoldlaw 12-04-2008 06:45 PM

I know right, pair of $100 headphones that piss me off.. seems like a good deal.

debaserr 12-04-2008 10:11 PM

maybe you should do some neck strengthening excercises.

thegoldlaw 12-05-2008 02:46 PM

Or I get a lighter and bassier pair of headphones that don't need an equalizer to use.

Blue 12-25-2008 10:19 PM

I'm very glad I found this thread. I got some money for Christmas, and was hoping to buy a good pair of headphones finally, and everyone seems so enamored with the Sennheiser 280s that I htink that's what I'm going to get. Hopefully tomorrow in fact. They should be a hell of an upgrade over my $15 earbuds.

i had them man.. and really disliked them.. absoolutely NO BASS.. if you are looking for bass you're going to be in for a surprize. Also the size of them is a bit overwhelming.

I returned them and now trying the 212's. They are extremely light and have a very good bass responce. I think they are a really good pair for almost anything. On a couple of the songs i listen too you can hear a bit distortion, but i think that is because I have mine equalized for bass 100%.

My friend just got a pair of Senn 555's and wont shut up about how great they are. So those 2 pairs if you have the chance to try out I would, this assuming you want some amount of bass. If bass is not an issue then 280's will do exactly what you want. The sound quality is unreal, but lacking bass.

Dr_Rez 12-26-2008 08:21 PM

Just got a pair of Sony Noise Reduction Studio Headphones for only 50 bucks. Sound great, except the fact the bass could be stronger. But for 50 you cant go wrong.

thegoldlaw 12-27-2008 09:42 AM

The 212's are also $50 and they dont say noise cancellation but for the most part they seem to do a great job @ it.

Ok cool I'm going to keep that in mind. I'm heading to a store that has all three that you mentioned in stock, as well some Bose I wanted to try out. I was originally thinking I'd get a pair of around the ear Bose, but the headband on the normal one looks really weak, thin and plastic. My friend has the noise cancelling ones, and they're great, but I don't think I can justify $400 headphones. I'll be back with something today though. I actually don't think the bass will bea big problem for me. Obviously I need some, but I won't be listening to hip-hop, or other bass orientated music. I'll have to just try them out and see.

thegoldlaw 12-30-2008 09:23 AM

My friend had the bose and I wasn't a big fan of them. Maybe I expected too much for the money but I was greatly dissapointed. I have an HP laptop that has 2x headphone jacks in the front. I plugged both headphones in and listened with my cheap $15 sony and his $150 bose ones. I noticed an ever so slight distortion on the sony when I played classical music and jazz but when I played any techno, rap or rock they sounded almost identical.

If you go to these stores I would bring an ipod, any mp3 player or a phone that plays sound and listen to how they sound that way. There are some headphones that need ample power to get the ful sound and without this amount of power they sound underwhelming.

Dually noted. I'll definitely have my ipod on me. Thanks for the heads up.
