Cheapest and best microphone?

it depends on what you're using the mic for.

personally i feel the AKG C1000 condensers are the most practical.
robust, cheap and can be used as omnidirectional or add a capsule and it becomes a shotgun.
If you want a mic for general use.

Depends what you're recording.

For instruments, you can't go wrong with an SM-57, and they're VERY cheap for the sound quality. Good to team one up with a condenser and mix the two together for a rich instrument sound.

anyone knows a good (cheap) mic that will distort naturally if i scream into it? im loking to get a nice vintage sound... but i'm finding this difficult

I agree with VEGANGELICA, I have a MXL 991 and a MXL V63M and the sound is exactly what I was looking for...but then, I'm into recording music, not toting mics for video recording.
