Definately a vinyl guy here. Been collecting a long time. It does sound better (imo) too, but you have to find records that are in good condition (if used), and good pressings (there are big differences between the "same" record). Also having a decent turnatable, cartridge and pre-amp. And lastly, cleaning, and keeping your records clean. These things can take some of the "fun" out of it, but all very important for the best sound. This is why so c.d.s are so popular, it's easy. I buy many records from www.Gemm, they have anything you would want, and they rate their sellers. The records are "graded" by the seller, so if you see a "VG+" graded record, you know it will be in decent condition. www.Recordsbymail is also good for buying online. Many vinyl fans over at the Steve Hoffman (.tv) audiophile forum. This is where you can learn alot about records (good pressings, turntables, etc..) - Rock On!

Dr_Rez 05-10-2010 08:54 PM

Anyone know of a good player I could get online? Digital or not really doesnt matter. Because my current record player is busted to ****. Im really only looking to spend a few hundred at most.

I buy them. I just bought Pink Floyd- Wish you where here, week before last.

Mojo 07-10-2010 01:06 PM

I havent been bought much music at all over the last couple of years, bar the odd second hand bargain here and there, due to lack of spare cash. However i used to buy loads of vinyl. I can't wait until i can start to buy it again. I like to own music, i like to have hard copies. I appreciate being able to hold it rather than just simply have it in digital form and i appreciate the artwork.

I really want Jeff Buckley - Grace as its my favourite album, Manic Street Preachers - Holy Bible as its probably my second favourite album and i love the artwork and also The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers mainly for the fantastic artwork. Its certainly not my favourite Beatles album.

Stone Birds 07-10-2010 02:26 PM

currently no, but in the future i'm gonna think about it but probably more for the effect like if i were to record a guitar track on a 7inch and then i'd remix it into a final mix.

exactly man... thats mostly why i started buying vinyl, almost to combat the whole ipod on random mp3 thing. i want something real for my money and vinyl is almost a form of art in and of itself.
recently thought ive realized how superior it is to other recording mediums. a good pressing on a good speaker system is just incredible.

The Fascinating Turnip 07-12-2010 03:24 PM

I recently acquired The Smiths' s/t and The Velvet Underground & Nico on vinyl.

Both are albums I love by bands I love, and the latter has amazing artwork that would only be dignified on vinyl.

My brother has that exact album on vinyl.

lately I've been downloading mostly digital versions of vinyl rips. so long as it's a quality rip, the sound is usually quite superior.

16 bit 44.1khz kills most of the vinyl sound.
But you do run into some nice rips.
Often the mastering has been done differently for the vinyl version, less limiting, less accent on higher tones. It usually makes for a relaxed listen.
Still I get the idea most of the vinyl rips are done from cheap ass USB turntables and budget technics, pioneers with stock cartridges. It's nice people take the effort, but in that case my CD player is just better.

debaserr 04-21-2011 08:54 AM

I usually grab 24bit's from good setups.

s_k 04-21-2011 09:41 AM

Worth the effort. But they are hard to find .

You have Seconds of Pleasure! I don't hear too many people mentioning Rockpile. They were probably one of the most underrated band from the UK. Too bad it didn't work out for them.

Noah Bonez 06-07-2011 04:41 AM

i love vinyl, i have a huge collection, along with my dad.

Dr_Rez 06-12-2011 03:34 PM

Iv been collecting for a while. Less collecting because they dont sit there, they all get played.

As to the sound, isnt necessarily better, its just different. Anytime you listen to something on a new medium there will be a different sound. It is just another way of recording and playing music.

--

My biggest problom is the prices of new viynls. All I have are older ones from the 60's and 70's.

Batty 06-13-2011 06:42 PM

Digital is easy, Vinyl is fantastic

Townshend Elite Rock mk2, Reworked Rb250, Denon DL103, WAD SUT into my Copland Amp.

Musicfanatic 07-09-2011 06:24 PM

I've been collecting only a short while; month or so, since I got my 1st player, an old JCPenny's front loader. It's pretty neat, like a CD/DVD player how it opens. But just today I bought something a bit better for the JCPennys one has a bit of a hum that's somewhat annoying.

Someday I hope to get one of them expensive players and get a receiver for it.

ThePhanastasio 07-09-2011 08:03 PM

I have a decent record player. Need to get a new needle, though; mine's about worn out.

I've got a couple of stacks of vinyl. Plus, my best friends with whom I'm about to move into an apartment also have pretty nice vinyl collections. We're going to keep them sort of separate to avoid confusion, but all the same it's going to be nice to have that much vinyl to listen to. :)

Electrophonic Tonic 07-10-2011 07:41 PM

I do collect vinyls. I do occasionally spend good money on very good quality stuff and record stores. But, mostly I pick up stuff at garage sales for quarters and I've found some pretty cool stuff that way.

billyjerome 07-25-2011 10:15 PM

I just raided my parents collection and made a killing. Here is an updated view of my babies :)

Got yourself some Cat Stevens well done.

Rockets and Love 08-01-2011 04:46 AM

Yes I buy them, play them and save them on a vintage 60's Sylvania turn table with several hundred records.

GuitarBizarre 08-05-2011 02:17 PM

I am listening, RIGHT THIS SECOND, to Echoes by Pink Floyd.

On Vinyl.

It is without doubt one of the most lifechanging experiences it is possible to have.

Psy-Fi 08-06-2011 07:25 AM

I've been buying vinyl since I was 9 years old, before the digital age. (The Beatles album 'Help' was my first purchase.)
Still buying vinyl to this day.

Itsme 08-14-2011 10:31 PM

I do. I have a pretty decent little collection going on right now. Probably a couple hundred records or so. I love vinyl, theres something about holding a new record in your hand that beats any other format.

Edit: Haha I just realized that I replied to my old account. I forgot that I had actually posted this threat to begin with. Irony is amusing.

Zer0 09-07-2011 02:30 PM

Right I'm just going to stick this question in here instead of starting a new thread like a newb.

At the moment I have my turntable connected to my amp via the tape input. There's also a phono input and an auxiliary input on my amp as well as a second tape input. The sound when connected to a tape input sounds a bit thin and I have to use the bass and treble knobs to get a decent sound and when connected via the aux input the sound is far too trebly. However when I connect the turntable via the phono input I get a nice full sound but the volume is far too f*cking loud. Even having the volume knob up a couple of notches is far too loud.

Does anyone know what is causing this? As far as I know my turntable has a built-in preamp.

Dr_Rez 09-12-2011 07:41 PM

I just got a old record player since my old one broke plugged it in and learned I need a ****ing preamp to boost the signal. Thought mine had one built in but it didnt. Some bull****.

It's the preamp that is causing the extra volume, the phono input has RIAA eq cct added whereas the tape input doesn't and that is why you have to play with the tone controls.

Zer0 09-20-2011 05:28 AM

I knew there was EQ applied to the phono input but I just find it strange that the volume is so loud. My amp and turntable are both Toshiba and both were built in the late 70's but I don't know if they originally came together, and I presume connecting via the phono input is the correct way to go. The volume is fine when listening through headphones but when listening through speakers if you turn the volume up to 1 you can't hear much, then when you turn the volume up to 2 it sounds far too loud.

Batty 09-20-2011 07:17 PM

Is it just with the TT or does it do the same with CDs, if so there could be a problem with the volume control. Does it sound crackly when you turn the knob? If so it needs cleaning with switch cleaner, just spray it inside the pot and wiggle the knob for a few seconds. If that does nothing then it may need a new volume control.

You're boosting it twice.

If your signal chain has more than 1 phono level input in it, you're feeding it through a boosted input twice, meaning its going to be better off through another socket.
