You need a preamp/phono stage.

The cord that has been severed is a ground cable, you'll need to strip the end and ground it to something. The casing of the amp should have a terminal for that. Without it you'll get a lot of extra noise which will ruin your enjoyment.

Also, get a new needle AND a preamp, using a worn needle will damage your records.
