Default How to use MIDI keyboards

Hi, I'm new here and I really have just one question in regards to music production: How do MIDI keyboards work?

Specifically, if I key a MIDI keyboard, plug it into my computer and have a software like Musescore running, can I just play/improvise and have the software write it down and put it into notation that I can later edit?

Thanks!

midi is the "language" which a keyboard can use to communicate with a computer. I haven't used Musescore in quite a while and when I did I was writing everything manually (prefer Cubase for it's midi interface), but according to their helpcenter it should be possible to enter at least pitches, perhaps also duration of sound (hopefully they've updated their software since 2010 ) to your score with a midi keyboard/controller.
Which of course would make for a much more user friendly experience than entering all info manually.

You'd probably need to tell Musescore to interface with your keyboard for it to work!

Consider that you may not need a super keyboard to do this, if you just want to write sheet music on your computer a regular midi controller would work just fine (keyboard made only for interfacing with computer without soundbanks of it's own). Costs a lot less than getting the latest Korg

Hope this was of any help!
