I’ve been spending more time lately digging into how chords are actually built and how different voicings change the feel of a progression. It made me realize that musicians approach chord structure in completely different ways.

Some people think in shapes, some think in intervals, some use Roman numerals, and some just experiment by ear until something clicks. Others break everything down into formulas or patterns.

I’m curious how you approach it.
When you’re learning new chords or exploring variations, what’s your process? Do you rely on charts, theory, ear training, or something else entirely?

Always interested in hearing how other players think about chord construction and how they explore new shapes or progressions.

I usually find it helpful to mix theory with listening of just using one way all the time. I begin with the chord shape then figure out the root, the third and the seventh to see what each note is doing. After that moving the notes around usually shows me ways to play the chord without trying too hard. Checking the chord progression in different places on the instrument is also a good way to hear how the way the notes are arranged changes the feeling, without changing the harmony.
