I have an (older, not sure what year though) Epiphone Special II that doesn't see a whole lot of playing now that I have my Denelectro. I've thought about putting some new pickups in it, but don't want to spend more than the guitar is worth to replace them. What are some good, affordable options?

If you like the way that sounds and plays just step up to the Epiphone Les Paul Standard. My friend owns a special to and its really not a terrible guitar, but certainly does not inspire one to play.

You can get Epi standard SG or Les Pauls depending on the model from 200-500 range. Gibson may be putting out a lot of crap but Epiphone is still producing solid instruments.

Or go a totally different route. There are so many low to mid range priced guitars that are fantastic today.

well I think I am going to pass on the greg bennett. The thing was trashed when I went to go see it :(.

what about this? I could restring it for lefty right? would it be a horrible choice for a first electric? I just love these guitars too much >:-/. How much should I offer if I do (i mean the thing is in rough shape)

If its that old and hes selling that low theres a good chance it needs some major work. But for around 100 bucks what the hell, could be a gem, and an old one at that.

And you would restring it the same way Hendrix did. Just switch the strings opposite.

What kind of work would I likely anticipate. It would be quite fun to have something to fix up.

Its hard to say without looking at it. But if the person hasnt really kept up with it, it might need a new nut, neck straightening, and possibly wiring a bad connection.

Nothing that would cost that much money to have done. Personally I only buy guitar I can try out first, since so many things can be wrong with it.

GuitarBizarre 12-05-2010 12:10 PM

Disagree. A guitar that old could easily have stripped screws, a warped neck, the finish could have reacted with a vinyl stand, etc etc.

Essentially, when a guitar is that old, anything could be wrong with it. Without seeing it first I'd be wary. Of course, for £100 it could, easily, be a gem, or a nightmare. No way to tell.

As for restringing it lefty - Yes it can be done, but I wouldn't recommend it, simply because the nut might need replacing to accept the alternate guages, and without it you might run into a bunch of problems.

Tis why I mentioned you should play it quickly first. As if it passes those tests then there are only somewhat minor things to worry about.

Odyshape 12-05-2010 12:40 PM

Yeah I plan on trying it out will let you guys know how it goes.

Odyshape 12-13-2010 04:41 PM

Odyshape 12-17-2010 05:16 PM

Les Paul Supreme, nothing better.

BananaPhish 12-22-2010 07:19 PM

Epiphone g-400, none to shabby either. Also had a seagull acoustic for a few, had to sell unfortunately.

I own a Gretsch G5120 and a Gibson SG Classic, and I run 'em through a Monte Allums-modded bluesdriver (or a Rat, depending on the sound I want) into a Bassman 4x10 combo :D

It's simple, and it gets the job done, and then some.

For acoustic work, I have a Taylor Big Baby, and my bassist has an Epiphone EJ-160E :D

Hows that SG Classic. Iv had my eye on that beast for a while. P90's and Gibsons are a wonderful thing.

I love it. It's a great guitar. Since I sometimes get into a little higher gain stuff (punk, grunge, stoner rock), the SG does really well, where the Gretsch feeds back a little too much for my tastes. Otherwise, the Gretsch is my main guitar :D

Yea people underestimate how fat a p90 can sound especially on a short scale mahogany guitar such as the sg classic. I feel like they can pretty much do anything except the tight crunch slayer type metal.

Just depends on how ya manage your tone. I got a dead-on "Kill 'Em All" sound one time while I was just ****ing around.
