Aria makes good basses...my bass player has a 5-string Aria Pro II with Musicman pickups in it...great rumble, without being too muddy. Lakland makes some good instruments too.

It depends on what your going to play with it and how much money you are willing to spend. LTD's are good for metal. Id get a peavey for a good all around bass. I personally like thunderbirds.

if your just starting, pinchin pennies, and not sure if you're wanting to keep playing, go with a "Squier JamPak" or whatever. it comes witha sub-par (Squire Affinity P-Bass) bass and a sub-par amp (Fender 15B). good for starting. they run around $300.

if you want to go with Fender and plan on sticking with it just get a full fledged fender P-Bass or Jazz Bass. The P-Basses are about $400 and the Jazz Basses are about $470

Schecters own. my current ax is a "C-5" 5 string bass. for only $500 it plays great. if you want to go with 4 strings the "C-4" should be just as goodfor about the same price as a Jazz Bass (if you're a pick player the Jazz or P-bass would be better because my C-5 has really low action [string height] so it buzzes like hell if you play pick)...plus if people ask what kind of bass you have just scream "SEEEEEE-FOOOUUUUR" like it's an explosive and they'll immedatly start to worship you.
