Despite the fact I'm not a bassist (well, I am, but only for one band, and I don't use my own bass for that since I don't own one :P) and rarely even read this thread... you have a lot of faith in my ability to throw down technicalness sir.

hahaha at the same time the difference between active and passive pickups should be the relative same regardless of what instrument they're being used with.

I'm looking to advance my bass prowess. Outside of having a teacher and imitating songs I enjoy, are there any other learning methods to explore?

i'm a fan of playing along to music that doesn't specifically feature the instrument i'm playing. it's tougher with bass but if you can find something heavy on the jazzy piano side of things the bass might be so hidden that you could add your own distinct line over the piece. it's a way to build up improvisational skills without simply imitating what's already there.

That's a great idea! Thanks.

I have played bass for a few years. There are too many killer bassists to name, but IMO, those that I feel are a possible 10 most noteworthy are: (in no particular order)

Geezer Butler
Bob Daisley
Chris Squire
Geddy Lee
John Paul Jones
Stanley Clarke
Larry Graham
Less Claypool
Bill ****ens
Tom Jenkinson

That went too quick. I'm thinking it could easily be a top 25 list. ;-)

Aside from your grammar, I think you might have something there. He was a bad ass. Died in perfect form, too. I think he was pushing 70, and had a heart attack ****ing two 18-year-old Las Vegas hookers after doing an 8-ball.

I've been playing for about 15 years. My favorites when I started were Noel Redding and Mike Inez.

These days, I like to think of my style as a mesh of Les Claypool, Cliff Burton and Steve Harris.

Has anyone mentioned Charlie Mingus?

I haven't been playing for long but so far I'm making progress.
My biggest infuences in bass are Dave Ellefson and Lemmy.
I both pluck and use a pick (depends on what I'm playing).

Rather than starting a new thread, I figured it'd be better to just post this here:

Been playing for 5 and-a-bit years, have a lower/middle range 5-string bass (was cheap second-hand, not a preference), and recently the pick-ups have started to crap out on me.

So I was wondering what peoples preferences are, so I don't buy anything ****.
