Difinetely, the thicker strings and wider frets actually work to ones advantage, with bigger strings, they don't break as easly, and even better, they're much less likely to go out of tune... And you don't have to pick them as hard to get a quality sound.
The frets actually make it easier to position your fingers and controll notes much easier.
