Songs every guitarist should know how to play...

Post, and add whether it's for an amateur, rookie, or steve vai-wannabee.

Wonderwall (Oasis) - amateur

Soldier's poem (Muse) - amateur

As you can see, I'm an amateur...

Laces Out Dan! 11-04-2006 02:11 PM

Why should everyone know such a boring song to play like Soldier's Poem

Winter 11-04-2006 03:21 PM

I agree with 'Paul43 it's pretty boring.

But I think everyone DOES know Smoke On The Water, but obviously you don't HAVE to know it just most people do.

Blain 11-06-2006 03:43 AM

That's what I would've said... I think it's just a song that most guitarists first learn how to play. Also Smells Like Teen Spirit, every decent guitarist I've met plays that song.

Alo 11-06-2006 03:54 AM

Well yeah, I'm an amateur myself, it was one of the first songs that sounded easy, so I taught myself. It's emotional bondage I guess.

littleknowitall 11-08-2006 06:11 AM

sweet child o' mine, johnny b good, master of puppets, smoke on the water, 007 theme, etc. just random easy bollocks.

DearJenny 11-08-2006 06:51 AM

Iron Man hook.

matthews_world 11-08-2006 06:16 PM

Everyone should learn this - Pachabel's 'Canon in D':

djchameleon 11-15-2006 02:44 PM

I'm surprised noone has said Stairway to heaven yet. Almost every novice knows how to play atleast the beginning of it

Falcon 11-17-2006 09:21 PM

Enter Sandman is a very easy one that most people can play. I recommend learning Master Of Puppets, its pretty good and somewhat difficult.

right-track 11-18-2006 02:21 AM

Beginner - Pyscho Killer by the Talking Heads on acoustic. Simple and effective...it was my first tune.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqBlpd4mxAA... only for Gypsies and God.

All they usually know is the first riff and by the way it is on distorted hammond organ not guitar.

ddp 11-18-2006 02:50 PM

For electric guitar:

The "whole lotta love" riff is good value.

Sabbath's "Paranoid" is classic.

ACDC "back in black" is also tasty.

Master of puppets is great but to play it right is pretty tricky.

littleknowitall 12-03-2006 02:02 PM

Eventually every guitarist should build up a list of theme tunes to fill the boredom gap,

my list,

pink panther, the flinstones, star wars, tetris, the muppets, 007, mission imposible, lord of the rings....etc. as you can see i tend to get bored quite easily :)
and it's always fun to learn these if you happen to have an incredibly short attention span.

How long does it take to get reasonable good on guitar

Just started playing 2 months ago and I am making good progress as I have been praticing at least one hour a day but I'm wondering how long should I expect before I can play well?

The more you practice, the better you'll get, and the more you'll realise you have so much more to learn.
Try and play with other, more experienced players, wo will help with hints about techniqe, and teach you new things.

REMEMBER - nothing worth doing ever comes easy.

One day soon, you'll be passing on your knowlege to people in the same place you are now, so stick at it, and above all, ENJOY!!!
