but you seem to have horrific taste in guitars so whatever |
i play really hard fast metal, i've owned so many guitars and sold them all until i got my "god" guitar. my ESP M-II. speaking out of experience my taste is excellent, that what is so great about opinions
but yeah, 80's schecters did kick ass, whats the model they had that was cool...the only one they keep now...Avenger? |
granted.
I hate floydd roses and emgs which were my major beefs but to each his own...i find them tone killers but if all you need is harmonic squeals and booming bass theyre great. i havent had the pleasure of playing an old avenger but i have PT which is fricken awesome |
i keep the bass about 7.5 on my Engl for the black metal tone, the EMG's are great (81's) but my guitar has a variable booster system as well, so, AWESOME! lol
|
Right now its Carvin simply because all their guitars are custom built/ shipped direct, and Im a lefty, so their is no additional charge for them to build a left-handed version of any instrument they produce. That and the Quality/price ratio surpasses any company that's out there.

But yes, EMG's really aren't 'All that' when it comes to living up to reputation. In fact, I've found that I like the tone of the Ibanez V7 and V8 pickups a whole lot! Very defined without much booming bass. ---------------- Now playing: The Black Mages - J-E-N-O-V-A (Final Fantasy VII) via FoxyTunes Quote:
Both companies cheaper models are actually ghostbuilt by Cort, who currently produce the VAST majority of all guitars coming out of Korea, since they're Ghostbuilders for Ibanez, ESP, Schecter, G&L, and many MANY others. I believe the numbers are that Cort produce 80% of all Korean made guitars and basses. For those of you still following us, this means that LTDs and non-custom-shop Schecters are actually built BY THE SAME PEOPLE IN THE SAME FACTORY USING THE SAME PARTS BUT DIFFERENT DESIGNS AND PROCESSES, WHILE THE HIGHER END INSTRUMENTS ARE BUILT ON SEPERATE CONTINENTS. Please, stop throwing around incorrect information! I've already corrected you twice today and you've only just joined. I don't even LIKE Dean guitars, but I'll bet a Fiver I know more about them than you do, given that you're regurgitating a lot of ill-informed answers here. Also, you seem like an ESP and Engl Fanboy. Nothing against either company but nobody is infallible, even the mighty Ibanez I favour. Case in point? Finally!!! Custom Tele done... - ESP Guitars Message Board Read that thread. ESP Have made major ****ups on no less than 3 of that mans CUSTOM instruments that he paid thousands for. I've spoken to nileguy myself on occasion and he happens to be a luthier himself and REALLY knows his ****. The fact that HE was the dealer who filled out the custom quote form and that ESP still messed up his axes, is frankly shocking. He is no longer going to ESP for his custom builds, despite having a minor Endorsement with them last I checked. ---------------- Now playing: The Black Mages - J-E-N-O-V-A (Final Fantasy VII) via FoxyTunes |
I like Ibanez. It is the kind I use, and it has a really nice tone, and it doesnt hurt that it looks awesome!!!
|
Gibson! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Gibson. I used to play with Fenders, but as soon as I played a Gibson, I couldn't go back. I still like Fenders...but it's just...I feel better with Gibson.
|
I like my Fender, & if i owned a Gibson, Gretch, Martin.... i`d like them too!
|
i have to make a quick comment on the EMG pickups. they might not be the 'be all end all' as some people claim but they DO provide a noticeably stronger signal when running through lots of effects as compared to regular passive pickups.
it wouldn't be something people running a multi effects unit would notice nearly as much and it still depends on the overall tone you're looking for but they're hardly bad pickups. |
if you are looking for actives
seek out some mastertones a now defunct australian brand i hate emg btw these are the most amazing expressive pickups i have ever used or heard! |
Fenders for Guitars and Gibson for basses

Now the conjecture starts...my theory on why this is (and trust me, it is, I have guitars with both and have verified it on more than one occasion, and Dimarzio's website says a very similar thing on some pup descriptions) is because most players with high outut pups are either a light enough touch that they like the extra response from digging in hard, or they're playing loud all the time through MASSIVE amounts of distortion. Distortion always compresses a signal, so they're getting a compressed sound anyway. In both cases the true output of the pickup is somewhat masked, for different reasons. (Don't believe me about compression with distortion? Record a clean guitar then throw a boat load of distortion onto it and play the same thing. Look at the waveforms. The clean will have lots of peaks and valleys, the distorted will be pretty much 'On' or 'Off', and will actually be quieter all the way through, than the clean signals peaks are.) ---------------- Now playing: Ayumi Hamasaki - AUDIENCE [Darren Tate remix] via FoxyTunes |
i'm just going with what my ears say. i know you're right about loads of distortion compressing a sound. but when i run my esp with emgs through my setup it sounds louder than when i run my fender through the same line.
there's a significant difference in tone but that's expected. i just really didn't expect a noticeable amount of difference in the actual loudness. |

fair enough. i'll keep that info in mind whenever / if ever i get around to upgrading my strat hehehe
|
Gibson... I'm such a conformist
|
JACKSON!!!!!!!!
And Gibson, but I don't find Gibson guitars to be heavy, and I hate the SG, so I have my Jackson Randy Rhoads. |
Ibanez :thumb:
Iceman...aaaah. |
I am quite fond of PRS guitars, they are a bit out of my price range atm tho =/.
|
Gibson!
Then Ibanez second. |
I'm quite partial to Fenders... only because I'm so used to 25.5" scale guitars and single coils.
|
My current favorite is Taylor, I have a Hawaiian Koa Wood Limited Edition w/ custom inlay. I've had a few Taylor guitars, and I've not found anything that compares to the intonation, quality, durability, or stylish look. I've also owned and played for 2 years a Larivee - great, great guitar, but didn't hold up to well. I had to recently replace it.
|
i like gibson guitars mostly for the les paul and the explorer.
however, i had a kramer one time with an aluminum neck that was really cool. i'd love to have another one of those. and i always wanted to try a carvin just to see what they are like. |
i would love to try a steinberg stick. i think they look cool.
i should have originally posted hondo guitars, for a joke. |
I dont have a favourite guitar "brand" but instead I have favourite guitars.
I suppose if it came down to it I would choose Fender over Gibson. |
Sears!
|
Haha, partial to Danelectros are we?
|
Ibanez by far. But if you want to get a good tone without forking over a couple of thousand dollars, it's best if you go Epiphone, they are not as bad as people say they are.

I'm a Gibson guy, my fave being an old Les Paul DeLuxe with the mini-buckers. All guitars have their uses, though. Even a crummy guitar can have a useful tone given the right song.
|
-Fender Tele 62
-Rickenbacker ...if you're rich |
Strat guy myself. My first good guitar was a Gibson SG simply because I thought it looked really badass, but I found the fretboard to be way too thick for my liking. Then I got a Strat and never looked back since. I can play for hours on end with that thing with no end to my creativity (at least to me...maybe it sounds horrible I wouldn't know). I still break out the SG when I want to get a bit heavier (I do still love the humbucker sound), but the Strat is my go to guitar.
|
I'm more of a Strat man too, but my first guitar was a Les Paul, which was more comfortable to play but my Strat sounds far better.
|
I learned to play on an antique Acoustic Martin.
I love that guitar <3 |
Hi there,
I've been playing guitar and bass for around 40 years and from all the guitars I've played my current favourites for different reasons are: 1) Godin Solidac which plays really well, is real comfy, well made and is extremely versatile with all it's different possible sounds. 2) My small and very light 1990 Patrick Eggle New York in Candy Apple Red. I think all these folks who just say 'Gibson' or 'Fender' are misguided and that really doesn't mean much. There are so many variations that are sold under these names, some very good but others real crappy. It's just like saying a Ford is the best car I've ever driven or a Volkswagen ? All the best, Gordon. |

Ok, then, Godin,Patrick Eggle and Carvin.
Seems a bit of a whitewash question though. Like I said, we all know there are good and bad guitars produced by most manufacturers. It's like asking who is your favourite camera manufacturer? Surely it all depends on what camera you have? Besides that, there's loads of folks saying things like, "I'm a Strat Guy" or I love my Les Paul". As far as I know they are both models of guitars as well and not BRANDS as you say. Just an opinion... Gordon. |
Yeah I know, their will be the obvious strat or Les Paul but it said Brand, but hey, I can't stop anyone from saying what thy want.
|
I'd say my favourite brand would be Fender, seeing as telecasters and Jazzmasters are my favourite guitars. I used to really like SG's, because you can get a good distortion sound, and it looks sweet. Then I heard it's clean tone and it scarred me for life.
