Singing

I don't know if this is the place for a singing thread, but if not, could someone please redirect me. I was looking around and found this to be the most appropriate place - :S. Anyways.

I was wondering if anyone else sings on these forums (I assume people do). What are your vocal ranges? What is a good vocal range? What are some tips to improve your vocal range? Talk about your singing experiences.

Kendall2000 01-02-2009 09:29 PM

I can't sing so i use my fingers instead....

Arya Stark 01-03-2009 03:56 PM

Uhh.

I'm an alto for the most part.

I can sing a lot of music, but I'm not fond of falsetto, so I try the lower stuff.

Uhm, my musical experiences?

How do you mean?

I'm a musician, my entire LIFE is a musical experience.

MakingMusicLife 01-04-2009 02:36 AM

Your entire life is a musical experience, interestly said :P. I guess what I mean is what projects in music have you done? Musicals? Band? etc. Any training. Whatever, lol, nothing important to list - just trying to fuel a conversation ;P.

So just a question for you, I have a vocal range from G3 to an F5 (I think that's right, the G below middle C to the F above middle C). So not quite a complete octave - although I could hit F3, but I don't know, its not powerful, so I don't count it.
What is that vocal range called? I think it's called a countertenor, but I searched that up and it's all in falsetto, the countertenor voice, and thats a concious choice of singing, not like using the modal voice. So what is the name of that vocal range? Also, with falsetto I could go up 2 E's past middle C.

I know, alot of questions and little knowledge :P I hope you'll help me get all these terms straight.

Thanks.

Arya Stark 01-04-2009 12:10 PM

Ah.

I've been part of a musical but I had to quit.

I sing in a band right now, I absolutely love it.

I'm not a professional singer, although people have told me I should be because I love it so much.

If you'd like, I could ask my Theory teacher.

My friend is actually the one who told me my vocal range.

Lemme see what I can do. ^_^;

MakingMusicLife 01-04-2009 11:18 PM

lol awesome! thanks. I don't know much about the technical terms, I'm in my first year of vocal training so I'm learning. But any help is always appreciated.

How old are you by the way?

Arya Stark 01-05-2009 12:29 PM

I'm not in the process of ANY training. =[

I'm 17, why?

MakingMusicLife 01-05-2009 09:16 PM

lol just wondering. I recently turned 18 lol.
You know what, I never considered training really before, but this year I kinda said I wanted to really focus on music and whatnot, and so I have been trying many new things, auditioning and vocal training and that stuff. It's worth it if you at least want a shot at making it in the industry :S lol

Arya Stark 01-06-2009 01:55 PM

Eh, I agree.

I need to start training.

But I'd like to graduate first, so that I can focus on college. And what I want to do, you know?

loldrey 01-06-2009 07:39 PM

I'm a soprano, but my voice is way out of shape. My range is like two octaves, from a G below the treble staff to a G atop the staff. Not sure of the technical terms? When I was in choir my voice sounded a lot better. It's not terrible now but I'm not satisfied with it. I've been thinking about getting some training.

MakingMusicLife 01-06-2009 07:51 PM

cool. 2 octaves isn't a bad vocal range at all. Actually that's pretty flexible. Ah yes, xxawwxsugarxx, choosing where to go after high school. I'm in my first year of university and I'm dreading the heck out of it. lol.

Do you guys think a better vocal range is one that is higher or broader or controlled? I mean, I know all factors are important, but what do you think? I don't have too high of a vocal range, it's not too bad for a guy, but I have decent control over my voice--what does that classify we as? A capable singer? lol

loldrey 01-06-2009 07:53 PM

Control is the hardest part for me. I can control my voice but it doesn't take much to throw me off (i.e. dry throat, mild cold, allergies).

Arya Stark 01-07-2009 10:56 AM

Hehe, I think it's good to be a capable singer.

My voice can reach high notes in falsetto but I'd rather it not. Every cover song we do of someone with a high voice or something, we just move down a couple of half steps.

It's most important to have control.

I'm not GOOD at reaching high notes, but if I can better control my falsetto, it'll be fine.

Arya Stark 01-25-2009 08:21 PM

How long have you been singing?

Arya Stark 01-25-2009 10:18 PM

Goodness.

Guybrush 01-26-2009 05:17 AM

I'll sing when I'm on my own or my girlfriend's the only one around or perhaps when I'm drunk. That's the only times I'll do "lead vocals" .. :D

My girlfriend says she likes my voice, but I don't really like to hear myself on recordings much and I have very little confidence in myself and singing (plus - girlfriends have to be biased anyways, so why trust her?). I'm quite able to sing, but I'm just not convinced that my voice sounds good.

Other than that, I do backing vocals now and then in bands, live and on recordings .. I'm fine with not being so up-front. :D

I've no idea what my range is. Good enough to sing along to most of the music I like.

Arya Stark 01-26-2009 07:27 AM

I'm sure you're fine.
I would love to hear you sometime.

MakingMusicLife 01-27-2009 03:16 AM

Sweet, if you guys have any renditions of you singing, you should post a link to show us.

I've got some youtube videos, if anyone is interested in watching. I think my latest one is my best, and if you want them in the order they were published, you'll see a noticable improvement- hopefully XD haha.

Arya Stark 01-28-2009 01:42 PM

Goodness. I can't put myself, I'll watch you when I get a chance.

I'm on YouTube, but my guitar is horribly out of tune.

MakingMusicLife 01-28-2009 03:51 PM

lol, aww you should put up something of you singing. It'd be cool to hear. :P What's your youtube guitar vid?

I don't have anything on YouTube, but you can hear me singing on the track called "Sixth and Flower" here.

I have no illusions about having the greatest singing voice in the world, but there it is at any rate.

Arya Stark 01-28-2009 04:20 PM

Hehe. Uhm.

I have one of my old band.

I'll put it up.

Or not, for some reason YouTube isn't working right now. -_-

I'll put it at soon as I can, then.

Arya Stark 01-28-2009 04:31 PM

YouTube - Lightly Carbonated -- Something More

Here's my old band. T.T

Nessie29 01-28-2009 07:11 PM

i sing...but mostly just for fun...and i do most of my 'good' singing in the shower...hehe....

TshirNoise 01-28-2009 07:52 PM

I have a pretty decent range, can hit the notes nicely but my voice doesn't have that "star" quality...which is why I don't sing my own songs. I've been trying to get a friend of mine to do it but she's shy, meh.

There is no such thing as a good range. A range is a range and what you can do is what you can do unless you practice enough to expand your current ability. The previous sentence has been brought to you by my high school choir teacher. Octave jumps will never be the same without him!

i dig it. as odd as it may sound your stuff reminds me of what i've heard from eric avery's solo work. mostly in the vocal delivery and lyrical style.

sugarandspite 02-20-2009 12:43 AM

I've never checked my vocal range, but it's not in any way impressive. What I will say, is don't smoke or drink excessive amounts of alcohol, and learn how to take care of your voice. I used to have a pretty voice, now it's pretty ****ed up. Works for me though, I couldn't really care less.

MindlessMusePanic 02-23-2009 01:07 PM

:)

I Love To Sing,I'm not sure of my range! but i love to sing paramore and evanescence, but a lot of male songs too.....XD

Kamikazi Kat 03-21-2009 02:26 AM

I can sing fairly well. I think I'm pretty decent for somebody that has never recieved any lessons, training or anything. But I usually do alot of weird vocal things such as metal screams and growls, a variety of other weird sounds, low and raspy blues singer imitations, and beatboxing. None of it is amazing, but I'm proud of the fact that I at least sound like I'm on the path of eventually reaching a point where it sounds like my favorite vocalists such as Mike Patton.

I'm definately not sure of my vocal range though. I'm not really very knowledgeble on the names of different chords and notes, although I seem to have a good sense of it. I was thinking of getting more serious about vocals, possibly getting lessons, or joining choir class at school but I'm more interested in what crazy sounds I can make with my voice then singing.

KelticKalamity 03-23-2009 08:55 PM

Bass-Tenor

I usually prefer to sing in Bass or Baritone, because I can hit the notes more consistently than in Tenor.

Think of how Josh Turner and Johnny Cash sound, that's about where I like to sing at

Farfisa 03-28-2009 01:51 PM

I wish I could sing but... my voice is worse then Yoko Ono's.

Freebase Dali 03-31-2009 10:31 AM

When I sing, it sounds like a cat in heat and getting run over by a go-kart at the same time. :(

Arya Stark 03-31-2009 10:56 AM

I hope I'm not that bad. >.>

Nation 03-31-2009 08:01 PM

I sing in low alto-ey range.
I'm pretty good I guess, I can grab your attention and hold it.

You can inprove by singing scales and things.

ElephantSack 03-31-2009 08:16 PM

Singing was definitely the hardest part of music for me to get into. Its pretty common that most singers hate the sound of their own voice whenever they hear it recorded the firs few times. I wasn't any different. I was extremely self-conscious. Growls and screams escaped me for the longest time, as well as having much of an ear for harmony. So, needless to say, I was pretty bad singer at first. I'd like to think that my abilities have improved.

I guess you could say that singing is kind of like sex. When you first start, it's fun and it feels awesome, until you realize how bad you are, and then it takes a while to rebuild that initial care-free confidence, which is a huge part of both - confidence.

this applies to every aspect of playing music.

i remember a friend of mine's gf stating that she liked watching people play music because it gave her a good idea of how they would be in bed hahaha

In that case, I must be fast, loud and animated. :finger:

GuitarBizarre 04-07-2009 01:52 PM

That concept raises a million implications for me, considering my style of playing and composing.
