Bass is the easiest to pick up and be adequate with.

I would say this entirely depends on how good a person's natural rhythm is. Bass is alll about rhythm. Plus its' difficulty is under rated. Even if it's often one note at a time, its a big string. I tend to think just learning a few chords on guitar is a little bit easier.. and the lay person might not notice a slightly choppy rhythm so much when there's more to hang on to. Whereas bass is pretty bare.

Bass is easy to be mediocre with, but mastery, like any other instrument is difficult. I always found the actual mindset of playing chords more difficult than just keeping in tune, if that makes any sense.

Yeah that makes sense. I definitely agree with your statement about mastery. I suppose this whole thread will probably prove pointless since everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and no one can really tell this feller what is going to be easiest for him.

Learn to play them both. At the same time.

It sounds as if you're looking for the easy way out. If you really wanted to play those instruments you wouldn't be looking at how easy it would be to play it, but on which one you'd perfer. I've played both instruments and to be honest like a few other people said there the same difficulty. If I were you I'd go with the guitar. It's really up to you I don't know why you posted this here to be honest. I don't think it's the smartest idea to let people on a forum decide for you what you should and shouldn't play.

Each person has their preference, but to be honest the drum acts as a backbone to a melody where areas the guitar figuratively acts as wings just as role of many other instruments. Being that each give a different tone and vibe. :P I'd suggest whichever you can grasp onto better, and whichever you wouldn't mind taking interest of even after your assignment is done and due.

you could learn both, my friend kicks ass at guitar and drums.

don't expect it to be easy though. learning any instrument, as well as being competent at it isn't easy

I would take guitar, it's more interesting and practical
besides if you don't become a professional, you can at least impress your girlfriend :)
