Drum or guitar

which is easier to learn? the reason why i asked is because its a requirement on my music subject. by the end of the semester, we need to learn how to play at least and instrument. i find guitar and drum cooler than other musical instruments. it's just that i need to learn it within 4 months!

mr dave 02-27-2009 03:18 AM

they're both going to require the same amount of practice to develop abilities with.

the more pressing question is do you have a place where you could practice the drums without getting a visit from the police for a noise complaint. they take up lots of space and are generally quite loud.

on the other hand, you can learn to play guitar on an unplugged electric. they take up way less space and are usually easier to find and cheaper to purchase (especially 2nd hand)

pahuuuta 02-27-2009 12:18 PM

Love the question...

Go for the triangle dude, in 4 months you`ll know how to hit all 3 sides well.

why do you need to learn it within 4 months?

And I don't know which of the two is easier to learn, but guitar is certainly the more practical instrument.

ixtlan22 02-28-2009 06:18 PM

You'll probably be able to fake guitar better than you could fake drums in 4 months. You could easily learn to play a few tunes on guitar well enough if you have good rhythm. Drums are really hard to learn to make sound good quickly. If you do go that route... don't be a afraid to hit them. Most beginner drummers I've seen hit super soft which sounds horrible. Good luck.

Yeah, but I would suggest giving both a quick try. I tried guitar and just didn't like it and wasn't very good at it, but it was fairly easy for me to sit down on a drumset and start playing some simple beats pretty quickly.

pahuuuta 03-03-2009 08:31 AM

guitar is funner to play i think

Grunge_Junkie 03-03-2009 11:36 AM

it all depends what your into man.

pahuuuta 03-03-2009 12:10 PM

Dr_Rez 03-03-2009 12:21 PM

pahuuuta 03-03-2009 12:29 PM

All throughout middle school band I got stuck as triangle players. Needless to say I had many lonely Friday nights.

Hahaha, I guess I just never had luck with it. More power to you to though.

pahuuuta 03-04-2009 08:32 AM

and i would actually recommend playing guitar, drums is overrated.

Sodacake 03-06-2009 06:14 PM

how can drums be overrated? if anything drums are more of an integral part of music than guitars. you really need to just not post anymore because every time you do it's becoming aparrant than your IQ is that of a sock.

I would say the IQ of a pudding cup but, whatever.

A-Greed, its next to impossible to have music without drums, even in orchestras there are Bass and Timpani drums that provide important sound, I've never seen an orchestra with a guitar, and several musical genres generally lack any guitar, whereas there are always some sort of drums there.

As to which is easier to learn, it can depend, for me I was never able to really learn playing a guitar, whereas I learned how to play the drums ok, had more to do with my outstanding sense of rhythm than anything else:)

mr dave 03-07-2009 03:39 PM

i think more people need to clue into the fact that pahuuuta is little more than a troll.

Sodacake 03-08-2009 03:24 PM

for the love of god someone just ban his ass.

Farfisa 03-09-2009 05:40 AM

Bass is the easiest to pick up and be adequate with.

I would say this entirely depends on how good a person's natural rhythm is. Bass is alll about rhythm. Plus its' difficulty is under rated. Even if it's often one note at a time, its a big string. I tend to think just learning a few chords on guitar is a little bit easier.. and the lay person might not notice a slightly choppy rhythm so much when there's more to hang on to. Whereas bass is pretty bare.

Double X 03-09-2009 09:04 PM

Bass is easy to be mediocre with, but mastery, like any other instrument is difficult. I always found the actual mindset of playing chords more difficult than just keeping in tune, if that makes any sense.

ixtlan22 03-09-2009 09:06 PM

Yeah that makes sense. I definitely agree with your statement about mastery. I suppose this whole thread will probably prove pointless since everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and no one can really tell this feller what is going to be easiest for him.

Jer54 03-15-2009 08:11 AM

Learn to play them both. At the same time.

It sounds as if you're looking for the easy way out. If you really wanted to play those instruments you wouldn't be looking at how easy it would be to play it, but on which one you'd perfer. I've played both instruments and to be honest like a few other people said there the same difficulty. If I were you I'd go with the guitar. It's really up to you I don't know why you posted this here to be honest. I don't think it's the smartest idea to let people on a forum decide for you what you should and shouldn't play.

Midi 03-16-2009 11:34 PM

Each person has their preference, but to be honest the drum acts as a backbone to a melody where areas the guitar figuratively acts as wings just as role of many other instruments. Being that each give a different tone and vibe. :P I'd suggest whichever you can grasp onto better, and whichever you wouldn't mind taking interest of even after your assignment is done and due.

Antonio 03-20-2009 10:29 PM

you could learn both, my friend kicks ass at guitar and drums.

don't expect it to be easy though. learning any instrument, as well as being competent at it isn't easy

Garden 04-27-2009 05:49 AM

I would take guitar, it's more interesting and practical
besides if you don't become a professional, you can at least impress your girlfriend :)
