All the help I had starting out, was my dad showed me three chords, and he would tune the guitar for me. I had to have the three chords shown to me a few times, but beyond that, I learned to read tab and have been entirely self tuaght from there.

Luckily, the help my dad provided was in fact easily available from a simple chordbook and guitar tuner, so you could learn on your own pretty easily.

Actually, most of my friends who play guitar are self-taught .. and they're quite a few.

yes, it's entirely possible. you just need some self-discipline and patience.

like GB i only had one lesson (from my uncle as opposed to father). a basic chord book is enough to get started. i learned through guitar world magazine, but now with the wealth of information available online i wouldn't invest nearly as much money into those.

tablature is easy to find online, and easy to read as well. it really depends on the style of music you want to play though. are you hoping to learn proper classical pieces? or is it just the only guitar that you have available to learn on?

if you're actually looking to play proper classical guitar you'll probably want to try to find a teacher at some point, or at least someone who can provide single lessons as there are a lot of tricks with classical finger picking.
