my friend plays the piano very good ... so she self taught herself the chords by ear ... just hearing them she memorized the sound, attaching it to a key on her piano ... so it must be easy for you.

i've been using some tabs from my favorite songs ... learning the chords one at a time ... hearing some tips and asking for help in case of a problem from my friends who do play the instrument ...

good luck, in finding your way.

drums: self taught for about a year and a half then took lessons for a month and stopped them. i found the lessons were nothing special, basically just told me stuff i could have figured out on my own, except for polyrythyms and some jazz beats i basically could learn by playing stuff from my favorite artists.

guitar: self taught for 3 years then took lessons for 2 months and quit. self taught guitar is pretty easy for me, i always had the passion and drive to learn how to do things so i would basically just teach myself how to make the sounds i want and from their it was just entertainment so i have no reason for a teacher. personally i dont like the idea of a teacher, a mentor would be nice, maybe if he was a guitar virtuoso that i could basically learn beside rather than being told and shown what to do and just mimicking his style.

Guitar:

Now days it's easier to be self taught then before...all you need is on Youtube and you can find a Guitar Pro tab for every song...but...you need to have 2 basic things...Talent and strong will...If you have that, you don't need a teacher...

A good teacher will not teach you how to play music...He or She will teach you how to feel music and help you express yourself through music...

So my conclusion is...you don't need a teacher. You can learn everything just by looking at other people and trying to reproduce what they're doing...(while doing that, you'll probably find some new techniques that you weren't looking for at the time).

You also don't need a teacher for your creativity...you maybe just need a guide...

And this concludes the first 10-12 years of playing guitar...then look for a teacher that's a better guitarist than you are...If you pushed realy hard in the first part, finding someone better than you will be a difficult job, but then you'll know what is still there for you to learn...

(my English is not very good, but I think you understand what I mean...)

Yeah I find strong will probably the second most important thing to learning any instrument. I taught myself on guitar, practiced about 6 hours a day for a few years.. But then every once in a while someone shows me something on guitar and I'm like I NEVER would have thought of playing that way, rhythm, progression... So playing and learning form other people I think is great too.

I'm self taught on the bass. I took 2 lessons from a crappy teacher, but once they found out I already knew the basics of how to play, they asked me to bring CDs in and he'd teach me how to play the songs.

So I've got a bad view of music teachers. I say find music you love and learn to play it. If you keep at it, the pieces will fall into place.

With all three of the instruments I play, I am in fact self taught. It's definitely much harder but at least you don't have someone yelling at you and complaining.
