I've been playing guitar for about 7 years now...I think I started sometime around 6th grade. I've only ever gotten rid of ONE guitar I've ever owned and that ended up having a good and bad side to it. I traded it in and got an ESP Horizon instead..that's the good, but the Ibanez I got rid of turned out to be a pretty rare model (RGRT47DX).

In any case, over the course of the last 7 years I've built up quite a collection of instruments and gear. I have a total of 7 electric guitars, one acoustic guitar, and an all tube full stack.

Here's a shot of all my electrics:


From left to right:

1995 ESP Horizon - NOT AN LTD! This is a real, Japanese made ESP. Traded in another guitar I had to get this. Only paid $500 total with the original ESP hardshell case included. Dropped a Seymour Duncan "Screamin' Demon" in the bridge position because the stock pickups had no balls whatsoever.

1985 Ibanez Roadstar RS530 - I put one of those newer RG350DXs on layaway and I went to Guitar Center to put another hundred down on it and while I was there I found this guitar in the used section for a hundred dollars less than I was about to spend on the newer one. Naturally I chose it over the newer one because...over anything else, it's made in Japan (which is where all of the "real" Ibanez guitars are made...for those of you who aren't familiar).

2003 Squier "Fat Strat" - My first guitar. Yes, as you can tell I used to think it was really cool to put stickers all over your guitar. I ended up getting another guitar (that rare Ibanez that I traded) before I grew out of that phase, so I never took the stickers off. Haven't played this guitar in forever but I'll probably never get rid of it because it's got sentimental value.

1981 Ibanez Blazer - My uncle bought this guitar brand new when he was a teenager and then he joined the military and it sat in his garage for 15 years. When I was in 7th grade he pulled it out and gave it to me. Since then it's kinda been passed around to all the guitar players in my family. It's finally back in my hands where it's probably going to stay. This one's also Japanese.

1981 Ibanez Iceman IC-50 - This one has a cool story behind it. My friend had this guitar sitting in his basement just collecting dust and deteriorating. I asked him if he'd sell it to me and he said "If you can fix it up, you can have it." I took it, cleaned it up, re-wired it, and now play it on a regular basis. Yet another Japanese guitar. I found out it's worth $700-$800 even being as beat up as it is.

2008 Ibanez RG7120 - My friends pitched in and bought me this for my birthday last year because I had been talking about buying a 7-string and I guess they knew that at that point in my life I didn't have the money to go buying guitars. This is the only non-Japanese Ibanez that I own.


NOT PICTURED: I have, on layaway, a Japanese made RG570 (now called the "RG1570 Prestige". The one I'm buying was made before they started labeling their Jap models as Prestige.) I'm going to go pay the balance and pick it up next time I get paid. It's silver, has one of the original knobs replaced with a dumb looking gold one, and comes with an Ibanez molded hardshell case.

Also not pictured is my acoustic. I got a cheap Takamine for my birthday a couple of years ago. It's nothing special, just a knockaround guitar to bring on camping trips and stuff.

Now...on to the amp. After having owned my share of solid state CRATE bullshit amps, I had read a bunch of good reviews on the CRATE Blue Voodoo. It was all tube, and solid as a rock but had no balls to be found. I thought about having it retubed but before I had that done I made one of the best decisions of my life and bought a Carvin V3. For $950 brand new, it beats Mesas and Marshalls into the ground. Great amp. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to buy a tube amp. I've got it paired to two older Carvin V412 cabs and it pushes a full stack beautifully.


Note: this is just an image I pulled off google. I don't have any pictures of mine and can't take any right now because it's set up at my friends house. I have the same head powering two cabs.

I'm not big on Ibanez or "pointy" guitars per se, but there's something about an Iceman......

The shape of that guitar just confused me at first. I thought it was their answer to the Explorer until I found out what a Destroyer was. It's definitely a weird guitar, but it's unique, and not a lot of people have them. Especially from '81.

Well, since my guitar is currently in storage, here an online photo of my Carvin Allan Holdsworth HF2 Fatboy chambered hollowbody. Mine is almost identical to the photo w/ the exception that mines left-handed.

i've taken lessons for about 2-3 years, and yes i play ALOT, i guess you can say i'm intermediate, but right now i'm not playing guitar in a band. i play in a band right now, but i'm on bass, here's my bass, btw, i call her Big Red:




and i know my setup sucks, i just don't have the money for a new one. but seriously, i'm not one to go out and buy some flashy type of instrument when i can do just as good with what i have. i mean, i know there are excellent high end guitars that have good features and sh*t, but if i have a good cheap thing that works just as well, why bother. i mean, i have an acoustic right now that's missing a tuning key and i can still play better than a number of people i know

idk, i guess i focus more on what's being played than the instrument itself

i WISH i still had the beater electric i learned on. i played it for almost 3 years straight while i saved up for that mexi-strat at $5/hour. the only way i justified buying the LTD was a surprise jumbo tax return in 2006.

you're right that there's no need to get 'flashy' gear if you don't know how to use it but please tell me a small collection is in the cards. you'd be surprised at what you can get between $600-$800 and how quickly $2 here and $5 there can accumulate.

yeah, i see what you mean, right now i'm trying to save up for a new acoustic, mine's ok for what it is but it has soooo many setbacks. i'm ok with my electric at the moment, minus a few things here and there
