Any advice? I'm probably going to buy a second hand one first, just curious about what to look out for.

Don't know anything about violins, but you need to give the neck a good looking over. See if its warped, been broken and duct taped together, etc. If its like a guitar, then you can look straight down the neck from the bridge to see if its warped. If its straight, its good. The more crooked (warped) the more you need to NOT consider that one. That's the biggest thing I can think of.

No offence, but should you really be giving advice if this is the case?

I was just giving a suggestion. And if nothing else, I know the neck of any instrument is a point of inspection because if it becomes warped, it doesn't hold tune well. And whether or not a violin is more bowed than a guitar to the point you can't check the neck in the fashion I stated, they know that the neck is generally a weak point they need to check out if buying used. So regardless, I'd say it was valid point.
