I want to learn on my own at home. I don't know where to start, and I've tried online lessons but I just can't find one that really makes sense to me.
If anyone can help me get started and teach me the basics, that would be great. Or if anyone can send me a link to a good online class (free, preferably) where I could learn, that would also be wonderful.

Thanks for any help.

  • If you are just starting out, you're going to need to know which keys are which, and then you need to learn to read notes.
  • For keys, just learn to memorize. In the worst case, you can put stickers on the keys.
  • For learning to read notes, there are plenty of apps on your phone where you can use flashcards to learn while you're sitting around.
  • Once you feel like you're ok, I'd recommend getting a book for beginners like Level 1 - Lesson Book: Piano Adventures
It's curated to walk you up through learning at a pace that has been shown to work. And it's going to be less frustrating if you do something just outside of your progression rather than something insanely hard.

When I was learning, I would write the letter above the note, so if you're getting tripped up in certain places, you could always do that. Good luck.
