If you're looking for realistic sounds, you might want to look into getting a software based sampler, some sample libraries and just a basic midi keyboard. That's the only way you're likely to get anywhere near realistic sounds, and if you want to hear how realistic sounds can be with this approach just listen to the soundtrack from the Pirates of the Carribean films- All done with samplers.

The sampler is a piece of software that assigns short audio files to different notes, the sample library provides the audio files, and the midi keyboard is used to 'play' the sampler...
