Default Wah-wah?

Hey guys. So a while ago, I ended up selling my Dunlop Crybaby Original. I was fairly satisfied with it on my old solid state, but when i switched over to tube, it had way too much highs and I couldn't bring it down. I also noticed that the mids were partly skipped and partly muddied out. So now I'm on the hunt again for a new wah wah that hangs more in the low and mid range sweep and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions? Also, do certain pedals match up with different genres better than other pedals?

sounds like you want a Vox. they're known for their growl and contrary to popular belief it's also what Hendrix used.

i've owned an 'original' crybaby back before they had to specify which one was an original, an Ibanez, a DOD, and a Vox, i also have a broken Morley somewhere.

i still own the Vox and never plan on ditching it for good reason.

some wahs do lend themselves better to certain styles as well. i seem to remember hearing that John Frusciante preferred the Ibanez wahs, i found it too subtle. shredders like Steve Vai tend to lean more towards the Morley for whatever reason, from what i understand that pedal only activates when you're moving the rocker so you never have to click on it to fire it up but at the same time you can never just leave it on as a filter.

i've never tried them but you might also be satisfied with one of the newer Crybaby wahs with adjustable tone knob on the side, definitely try a Vox if you can though.

Thanks Mr. Dave. I didn't know that about Hendrix. Why does Dunlop have the Hendrix Crybaby then? I looked at some of the Vox wahs online. I saw the V845 Classic and the V847. Is there any difference besides the color scheme?

I've actually tried a few wah pedals like the Morley where it activates after you press on it. In my opinion (based off the ones i've tried), I think that design kind of sucks. There is a small area of movement where the pedal isn't activated yet so if you want to start really low, then sweep it up, it is really hard to do. Also, when you're really rocking it, I find its very easy to de-activate the pedal. I do admit that the fact that you don't have to click it is convenient and when you start playing, the first thing you hear isn't the highs. I guess it depends on the person.

I have a Vox Wah as well and I'll also recommend it. Great pedal, no complants.

Also about the deactivation, I've never found that to be a problem with my pedal. You have to really push to get it to deactivate.

Nice. I mean deactivate it for the ones that you do not click on. The ones where you just start rocking it from and it kicks on after you push it forward a certain point. I find when you start really rocking it, it deactivates when you bring the pedal to close to the starting "off" position. I prefer the click.

Yeah, clicking is better. I just ordered the Vox V847 Wah-Wah. I can't wait till she comes in. Thanks for the suggestion, I actually completely forgot about Vox wah pedals when i was shopping around.

not sure about differences but the 847 is similar to mine. the silver is a nice touch and the bag is pretty cool too.

as for Hendrix, Jim Dunlop did make custom pedals for the man, but it's pretty clear from photos that he wasn't exclusive.

it's pretty clear what he's plugged into, but at the same time there was a lot of money grabbing before his family took over his estate. one of the experience reissues also features re-recorded backing parts...

Honestly, out of every wah I have tried, my favorite is still the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah. It has 3 different wah ranges and I have found this to be essential because it allows me to really use an intended range. They are a bit pricey, but WAYYYY worth the $$.
