I bought an electric guitar a couple of years of go and never got around to learning how to play. Any tips or suggestions of what books or tutorials I might be able to check out in order to get an idea of where to start?

there are 1000s of tutorial videos all over youtube if you want to go that route.

but really if you bought it a few years ago and never got around to teaching yourself then i doubt investing in books or tutorial dvds will amount to anything either. maybe consider getting a lesson or two to get started, the interaction between a more experienced musician offers something no lesson or book can.

A good start would be learn the various chords and scales on guitar. The first scales I would learn (these are the ones I learned first) are the major scale, the minor scale, and the minor pentatonic scale. I believe these are the most crucial scales in music overall.

Also, learn the open chords (given that you're guitar is tuned standard, EADGBe). The numbers represent which fret you should press down on, the x's represent strings you don't play or mute (you mute them if you're chord looks something like this: 3x123x).

-Gmaj (320033), Gm is best played in the form of a barre chord (355333)
-Emaj (022100), and Em (022000)*
-Amaj (x02220), and Am (x02210)*
-Dmaj (xx0232), and Dm (xx0231)
-Cmaj (x32010)*, Cm is best played barred too (x35543)

The chords with * are the three important barre chord voicings you should learn. Barre chords are useful for playing chords that are not normally played openly, without muting any strings. The Cmaj barre chord is fairly difficult to play at first, but keep at it, you'll soon gain flexibility in your fingers.

Also, if you're interested in writing/understanding music, you should study this table.

C Major Scale
I - C Major
II - D Minor
III - E Minor
IV - F Major
V - G Major
VI - A Minor
VII - B Diminished

Using the table, you can create consonant (normal sounding) chord progressions. But you should focus on the basics before moving onto music theory, as it is fairly complex.

In the world of music today, it is wise to learn to play several instruments, the bass is like the guitar, but the force needs a lot more when playing. I would change if your passion is low and continue with the guitar as a secondary instrument that separate it from others.

Yeah I would go the youtube route man. Whenever im stumped I use it all the time. Just about anything you want to know from a million different teachers. Just find a guy that makes the most sense to you and get started. Your basic chords on to bar chords, scales minor, major, pentatonic. Depending on the genre of music and how far your willing to go its endless. The main thing that will stunt your growth in guitar is ego. Such a satisfying feeling when it all comes together though. Dont take my word for it..go have at it friend!!

To learn kind of basic cords and finger placements I went to google and looked at pictures of the finger placements and learned that way and plus went to ultimate guitar.
