Buying a black violin for a beginner

Hi, guys, have you ever suddenly crushed into some instruments? I recently have a crush for violin. I have seen the anime Dantalian no Shoka, and I am very interested in the Ideal Town and The Dusk, though I know that they may not exist. However, it seems that it is ridiculous that I want to learn violin because of this whatsoever. Friends tell me that the sound of violin always brings the feel of sad, and I agree with her and I like the beautiful sound.

Sorry to be wordy, so that’s what I want to say exactly. I decide to buy a violin from the internet and than teach myself violin. My cousin can play some violin, so I can get some help from him. Now, my cousin recommends me a violin.

(I am crazy about black, though it may look strange to have a black violin. ~) He said that I didn’t need a very good quality violin, so the price about 100$ is ok (bargain may hurts me).

I am 161cm (shy~), so it is a 4/4 violin. (I know I need to know the knowledge and theory of violin, but I just hurry to receive my violin. ~)

Do you guys have any advice?

I have more of a massive hardon for many instruments. Crush doesnt begin to explain. Gargantuan he-boner that wants to dominate the female form of a wooden soundbox.

Look at that violin you posted, looks like a shapely black woman to me. Mmm mmm.

Don't get a coloured violin. The finishes they use to achieve those colours are far too thick to let the wood vibrate, it will sound HORRIBLE. I foolishly bought a blue violin and discovered this the hard way, have had it confirmed to me on a number of occasions by real violinists that it applies to all weird finished violins except those built by masterbuilders.


The normal finish for a violin is, at least when cheaply made, the best finish, because its the thinnest.

I once saw a string quartet that had acrylic clear instruments, it was mic'd up pretty well, but I have no idea what they would have sounded like close up without the help. I couldn't imagine it could sound that great, considering the science behind why string instruments like violins/cello's and so forth sound the way they do. Basically what GuitarBizarre was saying.

Not to mention they paint instruments when the wood is awful, or its just a cheap bad looking cover wood.

Thanks, I'll try to give up the colored violin and find a normal finish. Though to a beginner, it may not matter that much for me. Just wait and see what I get!

Good luck. The violin, like most classical instruments will require a bit more dedication and self-discipline to learn than something like a guitar. Mainly due to being both a fretless and bowed instrument, you WILL need to train your ear to recognize pitch.

Definitely get your cousin to help you learn the instrument. Has he let you try his instrument just for fun to see how comfortable and capable you are to start with it? Be ready for a lot of screeching and harsh atonal sounds until you develop a fluid motion while maintaining enough pressure for the bow. Don't give up.

The colour itself is irrelevant, especially if you get hybrid or electric models, you can get them in any colour under the sun. My own cousin had a gaudy purple one for a while .

Your cousin is also correct in saying you don't need a top quality instrument to learn and a $100 deal should suffice. That applies to any instrument. Your first piece of gear should be something that makes you feel cool and enthusiastic towards learning the instrument (and stays in tune), once you have some defined ability and personal style you'll be much more prepared and knowledgeable about what specific features you'll be wanting in a better instrument for your next step on the never ending path of being a musician.
