Bass Pickups

Hey guys, I've been playing bass for years but now I'm in a situation. I'm pretty sure my pickups crapped out on me. My strings dont sound right at all even after they have been tunned perfectly. I have a Fender P-Bass Special, and i love a very smooth bass sound even if im using a pick. I never went shopping for pickups so im wondering what kind I should look into. I use D'Addario ProSteels, if you're wondering exactly what kind of sound I like from my bass.

What do you mean they "crapped out?" Did they stop working all together?
