Default Jazz and classical piano

Hi all,

I've decided to start taking piano lessons as a hobby, to cover some of the songs that i like. So i took a look at the yamaha website, and they have jazz piano and classical piano lessons. I'm totally new to music theory, so i'm not sure which one is more suitable for me.

I read online that as a beginner, it is better to start with classical piano, as it provides a solid foundation for you, whereas jazz piano requires more improvisation, which maybe more complicated for a beginner. Any advice? If i want to cover my favourite metal songs, which one would be more suitable?

I'm totally new to learning musical instruments so any advice feel free to say, thank you

Edit: Oh and whats the price range for a beginner piano?

Best advice I can give you is to find a piano teacher in your area with classical and jazz chops and let them help you find a decent piano. You can't learn classical or jazz on your own or you'd be doing it right now.

If you learn jazz, you're going to learn classical anyway because it's impossible to learn jazz today without a classical underpinning. If you don't want to learn jazz then go straight classical.

When you learn piano, you're going to learn the elements of classical music anyways. So why not just go for that.

Lots of metal bands have keyboardists.

Yeah but you don't normally hear piano in metal. But whatever melts his butter, I guess.

They use synths in metal usually, but there's nothing wrong with a bit of fusion either
