What instrument is this? (Nightwish--Beauty of the Beast)

Hello, everyone,

I was listening to Beauty of the Beast by Nightwish and at the first verse (around 0:44 in the video I was listening to) I was convinced I was hearing a bass guitar followed by a drumbeat. I thought this was pretty rad, so I consulted my bassist brother, who firmly believes I was listening to a bass/snare drum or something of that nature.

What do you hear and how does one tell the difference?
