I like what Pet Sounds said - piano can be quite easy to begin with, but hard as hell to truly excel on it and to play some difficult pieces. I find guitar much easier (at least to certain point). If you can sing and stay in tune, you basically need only few chords on guitar to write a song.

However, depends a lot on your musical taste as well. If prefer sound of a piano, just go for it!
