The viola is bigger, and an octave lower

Twas my understanding the the viola was smaller, but I do know its played in the C clef, and to my knowledge, its the only instrument that is played there.

Phishfood is right on this one. Its a very underrated instrument too. It has the richness that the violin lacks in the lower midrange and more detailed articulation in the high end than a cello

it's easier to think of it as a smaller cello, than a larger violin. we have the same strings as a cello, just all around smaller. it does get frustrating though when you have your own clef and no one else knows how to read it. i'm working on learning treble.
