Hi I was just wondering if Controllers are easy to get into and if people are willing to share their stories?

I guess we're talking the keyboard kind? It is to many considered an essential piece of kit.

If you're gonna record your playing or use it live, you should do some research and get a decent one.

If you'll be drawing most of your midi notes in a DAW and aren't going to be recording as you play much, you could get by just fine with a cheaper option, like the M-Audios ones. Bigger is better imo as you often need range to reach the keyswitches for Kontakt instruments and the like.. if that's something you'll be doing.

Hello! Originally a trumpet player, I got myself an EVI some time ago (NuEVI to be exact, by Swedish manufacturer Berglund Instruments). If you haven't heard of it, it's a wind synthesizer that resembles the three-valve trumpet system. It's also the less famous cousin of the EWI (sax version).

I do have an example of how I use it with my jazz fusion band Paradise League. Heavily inspired by Japanese jazz fusion I wrote a song called 'Acrobat' with the EVI in mind. The title pays homage to sax/EWI player Masato Honda and his song 'Athlete'. Me and my group recorded a live session video of 'Acrobat', that can be seen on YouTube (search for "Paradise League" and it should be pretty far up).

Check it out if you're interested, would be fun to chat about/discuss the instrument, its sound or just the music in general. And of course, everything Japanese fusion!

Midi controllers nowadays are something that you must have if you are musician who writes its own music! Midi can be everything- keys, drums, saxophones (Akai does great job on this front)! With midi you can work on scores, you can mix well the track! Everything!

I'm not a keyboard player, but note many other instruments have MIDI analogues. Wind, harps, violins all: and they are often just controllers, needing a sound source at the very least, and probably an amp as well.

A further issue's the dedicated nature of these sound source/modules.
