Most overrated thread ever. Nearly 2,000 posts and nearly 90,000 views by people generally bitching about aesthetic values. Considering all the great threads around here that bring me, and I presume others, to artistes I know little about or have never heard of etc those figures amaze me considering that some of these great threads get hardly any traffic. So in the end you would all rather fight a battle over what you prefer to what others prefer as if you were defending your footy team? Talk about cheap tribalism!:banghead: I just reckon I might be too old for this type of meaningless shYte. |

just when i thought you could express yourself intelligently, you have to resort to ad hominem arguments and intolerance. not everyone has the same musical taste as you, and because we don't doesn't give you permission to act the asshole. we're all people here. take a chill pill dude. |
Maybe I'm getting tired of people ragging on Elliott Smith and then turning around giving fellatio to artists like Bon Iver who are nothing more than pitchfork flavors of the month.
|
I'm not ragging on him.

I don't recall any sort of attack on boo boo - he's made comments about people like Nick Drake, Elliott Smith and so on being bad guitarists before and consider his music preferences I think the statement was fair. Reading his post I still don't think he understands gentler music that is more based on subtly then anything else - at least that's what I could derive from the bits that were actually relevant to Smith's particular aesthetic.
And yeah I do think that's what Jackhammer was doing. Seeing as he was one of the people running around and praising Bon Iver I find it hypocritical to come in here and dismiss Elliott Smith the way he did - especially considering the atmosphere and division that surrounds many of his albums and the fact he isn't even widely discussed anymore. He is far from the first artist that pops to mind when I hear the words "overrated." |
I never called Smith a bad guitarist. Drake? Yes.
All I said is that I don't really get much from Smith's playing that goes beyond the usual strummed open chords of other folk singers. He throws in a little more finger picking than most. But it's not like he's Chet Atkins or anything. Angeles does have some nice finger picking though. |
Have you even listened to a Elliott Smith album? He does more than just strum and occasionally finger pick when it comes to the guitar - like seriously I don't understand how you can claim to have heard his music and say that. It's like listening to a Beatles album and saying they had some chords and occasionally did some studio tricks but they weren't Brian Wilson or anything.

Now you're being incredibly defensive.
I'm not calling him a bad or mediocre guitarist, I've complimenting one of his songs, what more do you want? But really, give me some examples of him doing something other than open chords and finger picking. |
