Religion and Prog
 

As Macan wisely noted in his book, religious motifs are important in prog composition.
When they want to bring a sense of "upliftingness" to the climax of an epic, what did the old progsters make use of?: Western liturgical music, choral music...

These heavy religious leanings are nigh trademarks of epic prog tracks.
Look at the bassist's rising line in YES's "Awaken" - and other YES tracks.
How do epics like "Supper's Ready" or "3 Friends" end?

You got it.

True (UK and Italy) 70s prog borrows from the Romantic era (Wagnerian majesty) and Baroque counterpoint. These are highly religious-sounding.

So, Im not gonna argue this. This is FACT: when you want to make your prog "rise" to grandiosity you bring in 1/layering, 2/ religious motifs.


Bagg's isnt talking "the message" here at all.
This isnt a hype for Christian Prog - most of which is shjit-outa-ass anyways.

If you try, you just might learn that prog indeed is often very much religion-concerned.

Then WAR figures highly in Prog. (You would think Psych would have more to do with the theme of war, wouldnt you? But I contend prog covers the bases even to a greater extent.)
