Anybody ever listen to Beefheart's drummer, John "Drumbo" French's solo work? He has stuff under John French and Drumbo, and it's pretty awesome. Here's some background I found on a solo drum version of "The Thousandth and Tenth Day of the Human Totem Pole" that he did on his album "O Solo Drumbo."
Really like the sound of the drums on his solo drum music.
Sampled the sounds (not the beats) from one of his tracks (don't remember which) once.
Am I really going to shamelessly promote my amateurish stuff in a Beefheart thread?
Yep.

That was cool, could definitely make out the trademark French hi-hat sound.

While we're at it, here's a track where me and my friends rip off Beefheart (we do it all the time, but this one's really blatant):

Wolves In Sheepskin - Barron Takes Orders From the Captain

Indeed quite beefy. Also nice. Love that dry sounding instruments.

^ That's a clever track, Frownland; it keeps coming to the point of turning into Peon or something, but it never quite does!

Meanwhile, celebrating his blues roots, here's a Cooder-Captain collaboration recorded in 1978, i.e. eleven years after their Safe As Milk days. This is a one-off track that slipped under my radar until last week, but perhaps you guys know it already:-

Musical discovery of the day: the Beef playing some rather straightforward jazz. Anyone know of any similar recordings?

A muse told me this

Quote:
That Amsterdam recording you posted is from "The Tragic Band."
It was a pickup band that Don (and, mostly his managers) put together
when the Magic Band left Don at the last moment before the March '74 tour.
The clarinetist was Joe Simonian ("Del Simmons") who died in 2008.
I think there may be some other Tragic Band vids out there.

Makes sense. Doesn't sound at all like his usual primitivist playing.
I'll have to look up the actual player, he's great.

I just heard TMR. Weird as heck, but worth it.
