I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. I remember reading about how he was at deaths door 3 or 4 years ago.

He died at the wrong time of year for me. I think he's a summer only artist so I've been resisting re-visiting the stuff I've heard and exploring some of the stuff I haven't. I heard Lick my decals off, baby on y/t today a few times and was surprised how TRout mask like it was. I thought TMR was the only time he went that avant garde. Apparently it was his fav. but it's a bitch to get a copy of!
I've bought a c.d with Spotlight kid and Clear spot for £7 off ebay and Dust Sucker from itunes for £8. Still not sure what Dust sucker is or if the title is related to the famous story of when Beefheart went to sell hoovers inc. to A.Huxley. Dust sucker seems to be some kinda bootleg that got official status in some dodgy manner.

Jeez! Just listening to the 'Tragic band' album Bluejeans and moonbeams and it's really shocking how mainstream it is. Just like typical bluesy-rock bar room music from the 70's.

I'm sure some people are going to get mad and talk **** to me for saying this, Beefheart kind of reminds me of Dylan in the way that they both had odd voices, they both wrote some strange songs, Dylan was just backed by more conventional music. I think a song like "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" is somewhat Beefheart-esque.

To quote Frank Zappa:

"Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues was a monster record. I heard that thing and I was jumping all over the car. And then when I heard the one after that, "Like a Rolling Stone", I wanted to quit the music business because I felt if this wins and does what it's supposed to do, I don't need to do anything. It sold, but nobody really responded to it the way that they should have."

I think Zappa saw the somewhat experimental qualities in Dylan's music - compared to popular music at the time.

It's so weird that you mention this because I was having a conversation with someone about this the other day.

No, there aren't too many similarities between the two other than the fact they both: have unique/strange singing voices, have roots in traditional American music, and are skilled lyricists. That is just about all I can come up with.

I was just about to re-phrase my post. Yes, there really aren't any similarities. I just think that Dylan doesn't really get enough respect from big avant-garde and Beefheart fans. He wasn't avant-garde, but he really opened the door of possibilities for popular music. And I think he deserves some credit for that. His lyrics were pretty odd and experimental at the time. I think the Zappa quote says it best.

I probably got into Beefheart the worst way possible. At the time I had just discovered Zappa and I was (and still am) fanatical about him. I went on 4chan's music forum and the first thread was about TMR. I listened and thought it was the worst and funniest thing I had ever heard. I didn't listen to it for maybe 4 months. Then one day it came up on shuffle and I started to enjoy his music. I f*cking love Captain Beefheart, I have a few of his albums of vinyl and all of them downloaded on my computer, I'm curious if there are any good live shows or bootlegs in circulation?
